I've been in Australia for about two years now and have notice the PRC mei meis here are different to the ones you find in Sg. If you are single and unmarried, like me, you might be interested in finding out that its not the common PRC you find in SG. Instead of getting them "conned" you in SG, maybe it would be nice to "conned" back some of them.
1) KTV hostess, xiao jie, geylang kuei. This is probably the most common type of PRC mei meis you see in Sg. However, in Australia, they are not as commonly seen. Most PRC mei meis come from well to do and rich families in china. They do not have to "work" in order to maintain their life style in Australia. That is not to say you can't find these types over here. Some do work because of financial problem back home. Its just, there are many other nationals here as well, from Japanese, to koreans, to Ah nehs.
2) Rich spoil brats. Go to any boutique shop along King street, LV, Burbery, Gucci, and you would see them in there. They pay in cash, 5-10K one shot for their bags. These are the "elites", where the parents, probably the only child can afford to send them here. They have very bad dress sense, only dressed up in expensive stuff without considering if it looks nice on them or not. You would also find them in restaurants where they would order 5-6 dishes for 2 people and leave most of the food untouched before they leave. Note, these are still rare, but you can see them on the streets often nowadays.
3) Middle class brats, their family are not as rich as the rich spoil brats. But the family could still afford to send them overseas. They usually try to hang around with the rich spoil brats, in the hope to establish some sort of "kuang xi". Some of them can afford expensive stuff and can be flashy as well. Beware, these are usually the money diggers. My personal opinion is that this category is the most common you would find in Sydney at least.
4) The not so rich, but some how still made it in Australia. The family have some sort of money and could send them here but can't afford their daily expenses. You will find them as shop assistant, trolley lady in Yum cha etc. It used to be they are the most common Mei Meis in Australia 10-15 years ago when I started uni here. Nowadays they are overshadowed by the rich/middle brats.
How to tackle the rich brats mei mei:
If you are introduced to one the best thing you can do is ignore them. Make negative comments about their dress sense etc. Talk to the ugly friend and compliment the ugly friend has better taste. This should irritate them more especially they have been brought up receiving compliments all their lives. Suggest that you would bring her to go shopping for better looking cloths when you are free.
