The lorry driver reacted thus because of the noises SUDDENLY coming from his left side. There are many instances of drivers stepping on the accelerator instead of the brake. It's a normal bodily reaction due to a sudden surge of adrenalin.
KNN when the traffic rules is brought to court it is also an offence to react suddenly and step on accelerator KNN this falls under category of reckless driving KNN

although i'm a cyclist sympathizer as cyclists are at a disadvantage when there's an accident involving vehicles, lorry driver has a possible defense. he can claim he momentarily lost orientation when his left rear mirror was suddenly dislodged or got hit, and he tried to swerve towards curb as it was a safety precaution for all motorists to move to curb when something happens, and since left rear mirror was damaged or dislodged he couldn't see cyclist.
Cycling is fine la. As long as the cyclist is mindful of other road users, be courteous, and observe traffic rules. Basically don't be a dick.
I see so many of them on modern carbon wonder bicycles, decked out in stylo outfits and think they own the fucking road and showing their stuck up attitude. Any sane person in a motorised vehicle would be hard pressed to not want to run them over.

Hmm... my colleagues keep telling me how this Eric Cheung is a typical arrogant FT high flyer bullying a blue collar worker. From what I can see in his Linkedin profile, he seems to be just a junior level executive doing business development for a relatively small foreign events management company. Before that he was just a regular Joe doing events planning work for Shangri-la hotels.
