South Korean jailed 5 years, 9 months for drug possession

A South Korean national with a capital drug charge hanging over his head was on Tuesday given five years and nine months' jail for drug possession.

Kim Gwang Seok, 43, was originally charged with conspiracy to export not less than 1.5kg of heroin with others between Aug 29 and 30, 2009.

In the Subordinate Courts, he admitted to an amended charge of having two bundles of substance containing not lees than 550.7g of heroin which were concealed in his shoes at the departure hall of Changi Airport on Aug 30, 2009. The court heard that on Aug 25 that year, a fellow South Korean called from Thailand asking if he was interested to go on a free trip to Singapore and Sydney from Aug 28 to Sept 4.

He was told that his air tickets and hotel accommodation would be paid for. In return he had to help deliver some bundles from Singapore to Sydney which would be hidden in shoes to avoid Customs' detection. He was also promised US$1,000.

Germans and South Koreans diplomats are noted for their success in this area. They have been successfully done this even for hostage cases around the world. The skill of protracted negotiations. Unfortunately under the Vienna convention can't do much when someone has diplomatic immunity. The Libyan embassy staff who shot and killed a WPC in London was watched by the whole world leaving the embassy under escort to the airport. Nothing could be done.

At least the Romanians were prepared to prosecute him. Ang Mo expats who killed people in road accidents have skipped bail and got away scot free. I recall the GM of a Sheraton was one.

There's different law for singaporeans and foreigners. It's a well known fact.

Anyway the lawyer can always argue that pure heroin from the 1/2kg seized is less than 15g, so cannot hang.

As far as I recalled, they sentenced that young kid Yong Vui Kong to death as well for the same offence. Drug Courier.

Yong Vui Kong was 19 when he was sentenced to hang in 2008 for smuggling 47 grams (1.65 ounces) of heroin into Singapore.

Maybe mudlanders are not as equal as kimchi.

its nothing to do with diplomacy. its simply the end of the reign of hang-'em Yong. new CJ is more merciful.
