Essay. Didn't know there was a polygraph test. I didn't really want to join; only went because the girl I was interested in then went.

How many stages are there?

Not sure how many stages. In the past, no essay, no polygraph. Just security clearance. The char bors there more chio than ISD's. One is even a Perm Sec today.

The main recruitment pool of senior officer grade comes from the honours cohort of grads each year. The other areas of recruitment are those identified during NS, identified in the course of various activities of life including responding to a small ad in the papers advertising for some generic admin role in a small company. One of their top most person was identified as a NS Corporal in the Navy on board an LST. Thats life.

SID gets the best of the best. Not even PSC scholars come close.

ambitious gutsy visionary mavericks are not what they're looking for. that's the definition of "bestest of the best" in silicone valley. for analysts, they like folks who are good with languages, cum from ordinary backgrounds, above average in schools, stay low in profile and are satisfied with a stable long term gov job. they're not looking for superstars, just frogs in the well who don't go online on sbf to brag and pang tua pao. :p

do they pay well?

pay is better with covert ops and foreign attachments, as there's more risk and hardship (such as away from family in sg). for desk jobs, average civil service pay. those who remain in the saf (they used to be one but are now split) are paid better than the civilian side, but there was an upward adjustment in the civilian side to retain staff. otherwise, many wanted to remain in uniform as the pay was better. outfits or departments are separated all over sg on a need to know basis and in order for various staff not to know each other. ironically, they run a clubhouse (more like a lounge with a bar) only open to civilian staff, and everybody rubs elbows with everybody else. once in a while, you'll get to meet friendly foreign operatives there as well.

Is the foreign ops side large? Doubt they can manage field agents on the scale of other intelligence agencies. Aren't 1st and 2nd Secretaries also suppose to help report back?

1st and 2nd secretaries are usually intel officers ...it is a known fact in the diplomatic world.

I can't imagine anyone ready to ally themselves with Pinky and his party.

they don't know what they're missing. the pap elites are the best hope for the region and mankind. if they are running america right now, america will have budget surplus in the trillions and not a deficit that is running into 17 trillions.

Actually those listeners are getting pretty good pay.

Just a word of caution, those involved in covert ops are on their own when caught unless you are related to the Lee family. Heard that the top honcho worked to get one out in a neighbouring country only because he was related to the Lee family. Another got caught in mudland and was left to rot. Rumours have it that the mudlanders killed him. No attempt was made to get his release.

Lesson learnt - don't risk your life to serve the PAP government.
