His main motive was to pacify the sentiments in Wu state then that he and Liu Bei should be held responsible for the death of Zhou Yu. Liu Bei was new lord at Jingzhou and the foothold was still unstable. With Cao Cao retreated and the future Shu state not yet founded, another war with Wu state would be detrimental to their plans for the future.
Recruiting Pang Tong along the away was a bonus.
