Lee knew of Anwar’s activities, says Dr M

PUTRAJAYA: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he believes Singapore Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew had knowledge of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s activities.

“Yes, indeed, I think he (Lee) knows,” he told reporters after delivering a talk on “Globalising Malaysians in 2020” at Universiti Tenaga Nasional here. Dr Mahathir said this yesterday when commenting on the WikiLeaks cable controversy which featured Anwar’s sodomy trial being discussed by the Australian and Singaporean intelligence agencies.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the cable, dated November 2008, revealed that Singaporean intelligence officials told their Australian counterparts that based on their “technical intelligence”, Anwar had indeed been guilty of the conduct he was accused of.

The cable also stated that Australia’s Office of National Assessments had concluded, with the agreement of Singaporean officials, that “it was a set-up job and he (Anwar) probably knew that, but walked into it anyway.”

Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said Anwar was unfit to become Prime Minister if the revelations by WikiLeaks were true. “It is not just (because of) moral issues but because foreign intelligence has technical intelligence or evidence of his behaviour and this could be used as leverage against Malaysia should he become PM.

“We cannot elevate a man whose dark secrets are known to foreign governments as PM. They will have leverage against us and this may compromise our sovereignty,” he said in a text message yesterday.
