I remembered he was teary-eyed when he gave his little speech in front of his supporters after results were announced. It came across quite clearly that he was in a state of shock! Therefore he was roundly defeated and rejected despite all the advantages of being the incumbent and heavyweight Minister. Everyone knows that if it was otherwise, he'll still be around in politics; perhaps PM-in-waiting.

good observation...despite all the gerrymandering, GY lost. It was a solid rejection by Aljunied residents. I hope EC, AMK, TP, MP and other residents will stand up for SG and vote against the PAP goliaths at the next GE

Perhaps he knew that once the fortress was breached, it will be difficult for the PAP to recapture it. He could be spending the next few elections throwing himself at the gates to no avail. Such is the nature of GRCs.

In latter years he mellowed and became more acceptable to the public. But when its time to be trashed, he cannot avoid the inevitable.

I do not understand the PAP. Is the Prime Minister not first among peers? Shouldn't there be someone second or third among peers? Unless of course, he or another gets the sole discretion of deciding who and when to succeed himself.

Everyday Singapore looks more like a family-held corporation and less like a country.

It means his father told him so & he must obey! if something happens to him in the said 10 year tenure, DPMs will take over, so they have 10 years to look for a successor for the family business or else it'll be tendered out to the highest bidder! like many have said before, it's not a country, it's a business!
