is this just a dream? is this just an aspiration? can we truly be a gracious society? i believe we can if we try, all we need to do is to spare a thought for the others and encourage others to do likewise.

what's your take?

A gracious society requires leaders who set the right example, a value system which is incalcated by parents and teachers and constant reminders of the right ways to act and behave, while negating negative influences.
In a very materialistic and self-serving society with lots of external negative influences and incorrect values and behaviour from the leaders and role models, it will be very difficult to be gracious.

Hoping for Singapore to be a gracious society is like hoping Malaysia to be corruption free. It is just impossible becaus eof the nature of their upbringing and way of life. The people are not only competing with its neighbours and other countries but also withinh its own folks. So to compete and be No.1 how to be gracious.

Gracious Society for MIWs only. If you are not gracious to them they can sue you or find ways to sent opponent to the mental hospital like they tried to do to CSJ.

a gracious society needs time for the society to evolve together..

can't be created overnight....to be part of a gracious society, you have to go against the conventional practices..

it helps if there are not many distractions around...

Initially, people like you and me when we were very young we really started down the road with the best and most sincere intentions. We think everybody is great and nice and polite, we thought their friendship is real, we thought they are objective, they mean the best for everybody and we felt their words could be taken literally and that they would help another as fellow human beings in times of trouble. Little did we know that people are all, but these. Literal and proverbial Sporn fucks to the core. Ugly, stupid and worthless. Yes ugly, stupid and worthless. Young and old. Oh yes, some intellectual poseurs too.

People always talk about thinking for others. Bear in mind that they are only talking.

If you spare a thought for others and their situation, would they do the same to you? Would they? Not really right? Ask yourself. They would on the other hand, insist you do this while absolving themselves from reciprocating.

You do not see the so-called high spare too much thought to help and empathize with the so-called low either do you. The low is often jealous of and hates the high for what they have and their high command in the social and economic circles, while the high hates the low for their crassness and social positions and despises them for what they don't have.

So you have to understand that people are just dogs. Should you treat animals well? Like the Talmud would suggest, eating with Sporn fucks or any other kind of donkey face stupid fuck from elsewhere is like eating with animals and swines. Unthinkable isn't it? If we see you do this we will make you stand up, throw your dish on the floor and get lost.

But of course this is extreme. What we want to say is, be more selective. Objectivity in its purity does not really exist, maybe to a great extent, after-dinner discussions and theoretical dissertations. And people love to always hide subjective agendas and interpretations other than selfish hypocritical motives behind objective pronouncements and BS egalitarian rights rallying.:wink::wink:

get rid of million dollar salaried ministers. bring back the 10k/mth ministers instead who lead from the heart not from the bottom line.

me thought it was good to revisit certain questions that one raised previous to review its validity and significance.

with the floodgates opened, the influx of foreigners inevitably brings about a kaleidoscope of mannerisms, idiosyncrasies and perhaps even bias and prejudices. how is it possible? or perhaps me should rephrase, is it even possible to develop a gracious society whilst faced with an enslaught of ill mannered, self centred, inconsiderate nameless individuals in our society?

My opinion. We are a gracious society, only if it does not affect ourselves. This is the majority of Singaporean's mentality. Take charity for example. How many of us do charity work on a regular basis? No right? I cannot speak my others, but I can speak on behalf of my peers (the 1980s group). Most of them are more concern about whether they can afford a new car, if they should change a new job just for higher salary, thinking if they should buy a condo and rent out their HDB or planning where to go for their next holiday. Do they do charity? Hell yes, "we do" they will they you. "When Renci or President Charity is airing on TV, we do donate $20" This is their reply, this is their idea of charity. In our public transport, we still see abled body young people hogging the priority seat. The surprising thing is, most of the time, the people to give up that seat to those in need are FT single indians (I witnessed this a few times) When I was in Taipei, even at peak hours, people do not take up the priority seats in their trains and they do not rush into the train before people alight. We still have alot to catch up on graciousness.

I cannot resist myself to add. Even in this forum, we have people who just bashed into forummer's thread and screw them upside down just because their opinion differs. Graciousness?

The top, show them the money they will sprout graciouness from every orifice they have. ha ha ha. What good is it for being gracious, when it is an hollow act? like training the parrot to say" hello, good morning, how are you"...the bird doesn't know the meaning. That is how gracious we are!

To be a gracious society, is a cultivated culture imbedded into the peoples through many decades of behavioral actions and thoughts. It is not a given for a child and has to be learned from his environment and observation of his elders. What takes a few generations to achieved can be easily unraveled and undone in a short span of time.

In the Singapore context, the older generation was better than today. Age-old customs like respect for the elderly no longer exist amongst the young. With the advent of more foreigners in our midst, the absorption of new citizens from foreign lands, all bringing a potpourri of mixed and different values, we experienced more upheavals of our identity and culture. The daily scramble to find food to put on our tables, has woken the primitive base nature of man within us.

Being gracious and caring for others has to be continually enforced through our own actions and thoughts, and by doing so, observed and practiced by those before us. Maybe once Singapore has stop foreign imports and the emigration of our people, perhaps we can see some progress towards achieving being a gracious society, but the conditions to nurture it must be right.

In any society, the leaders must set an example for the masses. Even if it is just for show only, they have to be politically correct & appear to do the right thing.

So how can you expect a struggling worker bee to show more charity than the multi-million/billionaire leaders
