From the Press, the cement mixer driver have 20 years of experience & is mentoring the younger drivers in the company & emphasis is safety. The father of the boys, taught them road safety. What went wrong? both are taught to be safe, then who is reckless? who is to be bless, who is to be blame?

1. If the parents of the boys, were of a better social status, either one of them could have driven & pick up the boys to & from school, but they weren't.
2. Everybody is in a great hurry, the boys must be hurrying home, so that mum can go McDonald's to work part time.
3. The cement mixer driver must be in a hurry too, maybe late for his delivery, or going for another trip. Lunar New Year is round the corner, in what we say in Hokkien, "pia chwee", to make a bit more.

What can be done to make the road safer for all, not only the younger ones or the elderly? We must wait for the police investigation to be completed, then we will know, who was speeding, who wasn't & who wasn't keeping a look out.

It is every parents responsibility for their children, I believe that, many do, teach their children but they are so busy making a living that they have no time to supervise the children & see that what they have been taught are observed.

In other words, it is the fault of the society!

I sincerely hope that parents as well the authorities have a -think about their respective roles where kids are concerned. The recent white paper on population focuses on rewarding childbirth and looking after children. Safety and education for parents about kids should be a key plank.

If you have responsible parents bringing up their kiddos, you will not have a need of Police stations, Courts ( not the one which sells furniture! hahaha) , probation officer and your fear of you getting whacked by a gang from 369 or whatever!

These kids are good riddance and moreover, in this accident the lorry driver is NOT AT FAULT

The case is that the truck was making a left turn at the junction. The lights was probably green for the brothers to cross and the truck to drive forward. In such situation, if you have a valid sg driving license, you will know that the onus is entirely on the driver to check his left before proceeding. He obviously did not check left, especially his blind spot.

I have a valid Singapore licence and have been driving for more than 30 years, thank you. Simple question for you - how do you know the lights were green for the boys to cross? Why probably? Are you privy to the investigation findings to date? If yes, then simply say so. But if it is just conjecture on your part, then my point remains the same as in my previous post which is don't just assume that the driver was reckless and is entirely to blame. Why the hurry to condemn the guy? Surely as a driver you shouldn't find it too hard to put yourself in his shoes?

I don't know who was at fault since I was not there and am not privy to the investigations findings. But I do think it is premature and illogical to just point the finger at the driver.

Already reported in news that he was doing left turn.

I agree that parents have responsibility, but where do we draw the line in terms of what a 13 year old can or cannot do?

one thing I can say that kids today are brought up different from our time

was on phone with a friend the other day asked him to come out to meet at around 8 pm the friend said he gotta go get his kid back late from school, I asked how old the kid the guy said 15, WTF

The boys were hit on the left side of the truck so it is likely that they were probably crossing the road when the light turned in their favour whilst riding a bicycle on a pedestrian crossing. i have similar experience when waiting for pedestrians to finish crossing a road in the evening when a bike rider appeared out of nowhere. I almost hit him but for the fact that i noticed a shadow appearing suddenly, the reaction is so short because he was riding on a bike which moves at least 3 times faster than a pedestrian.

In short, riding across pedestrian crossing has its own particular perils and because we do not know the full facts, i.e whether the kids were speeding across coupled with the driver rushing to turn and despite having checked his blind, it is entirely possible that he could not have had sufficient time to react to the sudden appearance of the 2 kids on a bike. All we know is that cycling should not be allowed on pedestrian crossings because it spells a special form of danger. Cyclists should also be respected but they rightfully should be allowed to have their own space on the roads especially if we want to keep them from being hazards on the footpaths. Cyclists should also be made to wear helmets if they are cycling on the roads and the government should do its bit to impose severe penalties on reckless motorists. Lastly, i believe that it is high time the government creates a special cycling lane on our roads especially since our MRT and Buses CANNOT cope with the overloaded population, maybe cycling is a solution.

Maybe the dad can volunteer to take the place of his son for NS.

I will not generalize to all. Many kids are still brought up responsibly and have good common sense. Plenty of them walked home on their own at pri 4 upwards.

I find it disturbing and amusing that there are many people who actually think that the parents of the dead brothers ought to hold the hands of the 13 year old teenager when he crosses any road junction in a suburb. Is our expectations of teenagers that low nowadays? In a few more years, that boy would have been throwing grenades and firing assault weapons. My, they have a lot to catch up in terms of common sense from 13 to 18 years old.

I wouldn't allow my kid to cycle on the roads in Sg, even though I did as a teenager. It is so dense now. There are ample cycle tracks in public parks.

And I do not know of any bicycle manufacturer that markets them designed for pillion passengers. Riding pillion on bicycle should be made an offence, a violation of safety rules, if any exist.

Cheers!

Neither would I. In fact I cycle on pedestrian path if I can help it. However, people still need to cross roads, otherwise how to get anywhere? Another thing is not everyone lives right before a big park like bishan park. There is a need to get from home to the park connector, and crossing roads is inevitable for most people.

I see plenty of cyclist with pillion riders all my life, but have not heard of any major accident due to riding pillion. So it may not be necessary to regulate this. Not heard any country with such a law, in fact European cyclists often carry their young kids on pillion. I don't think this case has anything to do with pillion riding, it is merely a coincidence.

I saw some inane and inept facebook comments featured by CNA.

One was wearing helmets for cyclists. The boy's head was crushed by the concrete mixer. He did not fall and banged his head to pieces. So how would helmets have helped?

Two was a renewed call for bicycle lanes. These boys were run over while crossing a pedestrian crossing. How would a bicycle lane have helped?

Sinkies are notoriously bad for offering comments, opinions and answers whether on street interviews or Facebook.

Some people have made similar comments but have been marginalised. I just felt that adults should realise that they have a responsibility for whoever they bring into this world.

Make parents more kiasi and kiasu? Don't let children out alone ...always have an escort ...all households must have a maid so that she can watch over the children 24/7?

If drivers drive defensively for their own safety and for other users of the road, such accidents can be avoided. Since drivers don't do that, it is time to get them to face the heavy responsibility of driving. The death penalty for any driver found responsible for the deaths in a traffic accident.

Agree. A helmet would not have made a difference in this case but it will protect you in many other situations. There is really no argument against wearing a helmet.

Same with a bicycle lane. In this case it wouldnt have made a difference, the path those kids were on might actually have been a shared footpath? In any case, call it bicycle lane or pedestrian walkway, it didnt help those kids. Of course in general it is much safer to have a bicycle lane as you can stay off the road, further away from cars and trucks. Again, there is no argument against bicycle lanes.

This accident boils down to defensive riding/driving. In traffic you just cant assume that your path is clear, you have to be on a constant look out for danger. Be it the truck driver before making a turn (and i mean BEFORE he turns his wheel) or the kids who should slow down and check all directions before crossing at the traffic light. It does not matter whether the traffic light is green or red.

No matter whos fault it is in the end, it wont do anybody justice. The boys are dead, the driver has to live with the guilt in any case. If you want Singapore to be a safer place for everybody you have to change peoples mindset (respect) towards each other, continue improving the infrastructure and conduct frequent traffic safety workshops in primary schools.

When doing a left turn at that type of junction, drivers always do it very slowly because decent drivers would know that the pedestrians may be crossing too. It may be cyclists or joggers, we can never assume. That's why we seldom see such accidents.

The truck driver most likely did that turn at relatively high speed and did not check his blind spot while turning. If he had turned slowly as per norm, I suspect the brothers would have noticed the head of the truck is coming into their path.

Right. Did you notice a school girl standing while she held onto a seated cyclist's shoulders in one of the pics? That's what the two bros did. The bike may not have enough frictional power to stop with a load of two persons weight.
