YOG volunteer: YOG is an ill-organized youth sports event

I am a volunteer set with all intent to learn from the success of this Youth Olympics Game organized by the SYOGOC.
As when the event actually started, I can not only sense from the village where I am volunteer, but also from Singapore in general, that the hype for the event was simply not there.
As much as I would like to refute many people and netizens I know, I can but only agree with the fact that this even is no more than an ill-organized youth sports day event with an overblown budget.
From the sale of the tickets, to the treatment of us volunteers, to the usage of school children for fake grassroots, to the “involuntary volunteering” of tertiary students, to the massive budget increase, to the lack of response and transparency and the barefaced denial of each and every failure made by the committee, I believe there is much to be answered for.

What went wrong fundamentally was that they couldn't treat volunteers as in voluntarism, but treated them as in conscription, since they have the power and saw using that as an easy way out, up to and including imposing deposits and food poisoning.

Nanjing will show S'pore how it should be done just as Beijing for the senior games

I VOLUNTEERED for National Service & Reservist...that can not be considered as conscription, for I still have the choice of opting out, providing that my parents have the money to pay or me.

We all are volunteers, we even volunteered to leave some of our pay in CPF...

who says, we never VOLUNTEERED??

i agree yog is too much monies spent!!

sydney 2000 was so much better for the money!!!!!!

Let's see if China can stage the next YOG at a cheaper cost :)

Anything that the PAP has a hand in has to have world class price tag.

They are the world's highest paid bureaucrates

You speaking in metaphor or not ha ?

Just like to clarify how you do it leh as I am fully aware many would love to avoid 'volunteering' for NS, CPF, etc.... is possible.

Sydney 2000 is the real Olympics and Australia could win serious numbers of medals. I was there slightly before the Games (but not during the Games). The atmosphere of cheerful anticipation and celebration was completely different from that of YOG in Singapore. Did Australian government threaten to fine Australians for not giving way to foreigners? Did Austrlian government try to haul students and civil servants to "volunteer" for tasks and fill the seats.

Sydney bidded for Olympics 2000 because the people wanted it, would support it spectacularly as athletes, as spectators and as volunteers. Singapore bidded for YOG because the government wanted it, could wield their powers to summon and command reluctant support to make up the numbers to make the government look good.

You seem to forgot that in Singapore, because of many many years of goverment dictation and control, people no longer care what they wnat of the public and leave everything to the goverment...and would complain if the matter dont look good for them.

No, I didn't forget that. Indeed, I'm reminding people of that.
