Yaacob say son will do NS

Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Yaacob Ibrahim has dismissed online speculation that his 16-year-old son, who holds dual citizenship in Singapore and the United States, may not serve national service.

'Dr Yaacob's son and daughter are Singapore citizens and attend national schools. Dr Yaacob's son, now 16, will serve national service, just as he did,' said his press secretary in a statement yesterday.

The minister also disclosed that his son and daughter were conferred dual citizenship until age 18 because of his wife's status as an American citizen by birth.

The issue of his son's citizenship found its way into online chatter after a leaked US diplomatic cable published by WikiLeaks identified Dr Yaacob's two children as US citizens.
