The Workers' Party has called for a by-election to be held in Punggol-East single member constituency, after the SMC's MP Michael Palmer resigned from the People's Action Party this afternoon.
WP noted that Mr Palmer had resigned from the PAP and said that under Article 46 of the Constitution, Punggol East SMC has become vacant.
"In order that the residents of Punggol East SMC are properly represented, the Workers' Party urges the Prime Minister to call a by-election in the constituency as soon as possible," said WP.
Speaker of Parliament Michael Palmer resigned as an MP today after revealing that he that he had been involved in an extramarital affair.
WP also staked its claim on the SMC by pointing out that it had contested the seat in the General Election last year.
Its candidate for the SMC then was Ms Lee Li Lian, who won 41.1 per cent of the vote. Mr Palmer had secured the win after he won 54.54 per cent of the votes in the SMC.
The third candidate was Singapore Democratic Alliance's Desmond Lim, who lost his election deposit there, after getting just 4.45 per cent of the vote.
Said WP: "The Workers' Party is ready to offer a choice to the voters of Punggol East SMC again in the by-election." said WP.
