The chronographical records and archaelogical facts are all pointing the other way against the urban legend of the 4th Prince urspurping the 14th Prince to succession. Let's look at it logically from unambiguous facts. The 2nd Prince leapfrogged over the 1st Prince to Crown Prince in line to succession by being the son of the Empress. The 1st Prince failed disastrously in an attempt to coup him and was cast totally out of line. The 3rd Prince was totally unambitious and disinterested. That left the next in line to the 4th Prince. Where in logic and precedent did a succession to coronation go all the way down to the 14th?
The 8th Prince started the 2nd attempt to coup the 2nd Prince forgiven and restored as Crown Prince. He failed disastrously too and dragging all princes and nobles into the fray. The 13th Prince had to bear every blame including blames on the 4th Prince so as to keep him safe since he supported him all along. Kangxi imprisoned him for some 10 years until his release on Yongzheng (4th Prince) coronation. The objective was clear. To keep him from causing any further trouble.
Kangxi also gave control of the imperial guards to Longkeduo (blood uncle of the 4th Prince) and national guards to Nian Gengyao (servant protege of the 4th Prince). The whole capital and domestic military was secured under the 4th Prince. He did that knowing that the 8th Prince would flame the 14th Prince to contest robustly for the throne out of for spite of the 2nd and 4th Princes. Then he sent the 14th Prince to lead the border army. Tell me, think, which sane emperor would send an intended and impending successor to border wars thousands of miles away? That's to facilitate and not to complicate succession, isn't it?
The 4th Prince altering imperial will and usurping succession supposed to be for the 14th Prince were concocted by remnant households of those of 8th, 9th, 10th and 14th Princes who were in defiance and punished by Yongzheng with execution, banishment or otherwise, aided by pro-Ming anti-Qing rebels happy to cook up dissent.
