<strong>Methodology</strong>
</p>
<p>The Expat Explorer survey was commissioned by HSBC Bank International and conducted by the research company FreshMinds. More than 3,100 expatriates were surveyed between February and April 2009.The respondents were asked to rate 23 factors related to their quality of life, including food, entertainment, transportation, health care, finances, education and their ability to make friends. Each criterion is equally weighted to arrive at a score. The overall ranking is based on the average score for a country across the criteria. Eight measures were also selected to comprise the integration score: organizing school for my children; organizing my finances; organizing my health care; finding somewhere to live; making friends; making local friends; setting up utilities; and joining local community groups. The integration score was used to determine the friendliest countries. </p>

They say you can never go home again–and you may not want to after relocating to Canada, Bermuda or South Africa.

These are the countries where it’s easiest to befriend locals, learn the language, fit into the new culture and integrate into the community, according to respondents to HSBC Bank International’s Expat Explorer survey, the results of which were released late last month.

Canada was most welcoming for the second year in a row; more than half of survey-takers there said they’d made friends with locals. In Bermuda 57% have had the pleasure, and the same for South Africa.

HSBC surveyed 4,127 expatriates in more than 100 countries between April and June 2010. Because countries with fewer than 30 respondents were deemed statistically insignificant, the findings rank a total of only 25 countries.

“The survey was devised because, as a business, we wanted to better understand the expat community and the issues and challenges they face whilst living or relocating overseas,” said Lisa Wood, head of marketing at HSBC Bank International. “Since the launch, we’ve watched it grow into the world’s largest survey of expats.”

Respondents rated their host countries on a slew of factors related to economics, raising children and overall experience. To determine which were the friendliest, Forbes looked at the results in four categories: ability to befriend locals, success in learning the local language, capacity for integrating themselves into the community, and ease in which they fit into the new culture.

These are among the issues of greatest concern to people preparing to relocate abroad, notes Barbara Schaetti, whose Seattle-based consulting and coaching firm Transition Dynamics assists the expatriate community. “There tends to be concern over how different they perceive the country to be from their own–core beliefs and values, language–and how similar or different and psychologically safe they’d feel because of that,” she said.

Topping the list of concerns for those surveyed were re-establishing a social life (41%), feeling lonely and missing friends and family (34%), especially among women.

Canada, Bermuda and South Africa were helped to the top of the list because more than 80% of the expats surveyed there say they are native English speakers.

“I would say that the lack of a language barrier [in Bermuda] certainly made things easier–although there is a distinct Bermudian tongue, which I never acquired,” said U.S. repatriate Pam Shaw, who had spent more than a dozen years living in the country as a homemaker and community volunteer along with her children and husband, an accountant. “Overall I integrated well into the Bermuda culture mostly due to my involvement with the community and school.”

Coming in just behind the top three in terms of friendliness were the U.S. and Australia.

Interestingly, the survey’s top two overall scorers–Singapore and Hong Kong (Canada came in fourth)–didn’t fare so well in categories relating to community integration and befriending locals. What did impress expats living in each of these countries, however, was how easily they could navigate the transportation and health care systems.

U.S. repatriate Billie Cohen, a New York magazine editor who once worked in Singapore, chalked the country’s low penetrability rating up to a well-organized expat network. “There are so many expats from all over the world there, especially from English-speaking countries, that you can easily isolate yourself inside that world. But if you make a little effort, it’s not that hard to feel like a local.”

The lowest scorers overall were the U.K., the Netherlands and India.

“Day-to-day life in India is challenging,” noted HSBC survey respondent Naomi Hattaway, a homemaker from the U.S. who lives with her family in New Delhi, India. “The simple existence is challenging. It is difficult to be so far away from family and friends and frustrating at times to feel as if you’re nomads in a country that has adopted you, yet will never quite feel like home.” Still, she says, for the most part, her experience has been pleasant.

Schaetti, who, in addition to coaching expats, has lived all over the world, stressed that the overall attractiveness of a country differs greatly depending on the individual–and is not even necessarily based on what the new place objectively has to offer.

“I think what makes a country welcoming is the preparedness and orientation that an expat brings to the country,” she said. “If the physical and psychological safety is addressed, then every country offers something magical, potentially.”
