Uruguay don't need Suarez to get result, says Cavani
Group D: Uruguay v England
SAO PAULO - As the spotlight turns towards Luis Suarez, strike partner Edinson Cavani has warned England that Uruguay are not just about the Liverpool star.
Although Suarez has insisted that he is "100 per cent fit", Cavani seemed to suggest that the 27-year-old might not be in the best physical shape - and that Uruguay would win the game (3am, tomorrow, Singapore time) regardless of his condition.
"Luis was the best striker in Europe last season - for me, there is no debate about that," the Paris Saint-Germain striker told the Express.
"Of course, we would like him to be fit for the game but, if he isn't, I am confident we can still beat England without him.
"The Uruguay you saw against Costa Rica was not the real Uruguay. We have lots of goals in this team even without Luis."
Cavani, rated at £56 million (S$118 million), himself brings firepower. He scored 25 goals in 43 games in all competitions last season as PSG retained their French Ligue 1 title.
And he scored his 22nd goal for his country in 63 matches when they stuttered to a 1-3 loss to Costa Rica on Saturday.
His threat up front is not lost on England forward Daniel Sturridge.
"We need to negate Uruguay, not just Luis Suarez," Sturridge said. "There's Edinson Cavani and others too."
If anything, Cavani could cause more problems alongside Suarez even if he relinquishes the role of main striker.
Since moving to PSG from Napoli, Cavani has learnt to play second fiddle in a side where Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the talisman.
It is his unselfishness, work rate and movement that will create space and chances for Suarez.
Suarez, Uruguay's record scorer with 38 goals in 77 games, missed the opener following knee surgery.
But, as he prepared to play his first match in five weeks against England, he declared: "I'm 100 per cent, if it wasn't the case, I wouldn't play.
"Maybe I'm lacking some football, or rhythm; that's obvious because I've been inactive but, physically, I'm in great shape."
England midfielder Frank Lampard admitted that the Three Lions do not have a special plan to stop the scorer of a league-high 31 goals for Liverpool last season.
"There is no solution with Suarez. The only solution is to defend as well as you can," said the 35-year-old veteran.
"He is a fantastic player - the best in the Premier League last year. We know that and there isn't some fantastic way of keeping him quiet."
