A HOUSEWIFE who slapped and knocked the head of her Indonesian maid was fined $6,000 on Friday. Cheah Yow Ling, 33, pleaded guilty 21/2 months ago to causing hurt to Ms Aseni, 25, in the living room of her Holland Green house on July 17 last year. The court heard that Cheah scolded the maid for not cleaning a ladder used earlier by the pest control man, and for moving the dustbin from an area that was sprayed by insecticide. Ms Aseni, who had worked for the family for four months, took the ladder to the backyard to clean and got a pail of water to mop the affected area in the living room. Cheah then asked if she had washed her hands. When the maid said no, she told her to do so in the kitchen. While walking to the kitchen, an angry Cheah struck the maid on the cheek once.

When the maid was carrying the pail of water to the living room, Cheah asked if she had cleaned the other side of the living room. When the maid said no, Cheah used her knuckle to knock the back of the victim's head twice and called her 'stupid''. Two days later, the maid sought medical treatment. A police report was made on July 21 last year. Cheah's lawyer Jiang Ke-Yue said his client was under severe mental and physical stress caused by her failed attempt to reconcile with her ex- husband whom she had divorced two years ago. Two other similar charges were taken into consideration. She could have been jailed for up to three years and/or fined up to $7,500 for causing hurt.
