A 56-year-old woman was found murdered in a flat in Bukit Batok this morning (May 28), according to a police statement.

Reports said that a 31-year-old male has been arrested by the police. The suspect is believed to be the woman's son.

The woman was found in Block 248, Bukit Batok East, Avenue 5.

In a statement issued this afternoon, the police said that they received a call at about 12.20am informing them that a woman had been found lying motionless in the flat.

The case has been classified as murder and investigations are ongoing. The suspect will be charged in court tomorrow morning.

Clarifications: The original report stated that the victim's age was 51. This is incorrect. According to the police statement, the victim was aged 56. The body was also found in Block 248, Bukit Batok East, Avenue 5, instead of Block 238.

SINGAPORE: Police have arrested a 31-year-old man in connection with the murder of a 56-year-old woman in Bukit Batok on early Monday morning.

Channel NewsAsia understands that suspect was the victim's son.

Police said they received a call at about 12.20am that a woman was found lying motionless in a flat at Block 248, Bukit Batok East Avenue 5.

She was pronounced dead by paramedics.

SCDF said the Indian woman had a cut to her neck.

The suspect will be charged in court on Tuesday.

Some neighbours Channel NewsAsia spoke with said the flat belonged to a family of four.

The neighbours added that they had not heard any unusual sounds at the time of the incident and were surprised to find out a murder had occurred in their block.

"I very surprised, because it is very peaceful here. I've stayed here for so long but I've never heard people quarrelling," Vance Khoo, a resident in Bukit Batok, said.

"I didn't expect such things to happen ... I was quite shocked."

The 31-year-old man held in connection with the murder of a 56-year-old woman, who is believed to be his mother, was charged in court today.

Sugay Solomon Sutherson entered no plea during the court session. The next session will take place next Tuesday, and if found guilty, he will be hanged.

The body of Madam Mallika Jesudasan, 56, was found lying in a second- floor unit in Block 248, Bukit Batok Avenue 5, at about 12.30am, said police.

She was found with a cut on her neck, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force. Chinese evening newspaper Shin Min Daily News reported that a sharp object was found at the scene. The suspect is believed to be mentally ill.

Neighbours my paper spoke to said they heard repeated banging noises at around midnight. A woman who lives in the unit directly above Madam Jesudasan's flat said her two-year- old son woke up screaming as a result of the loud sounds.

Another neighbour, Mr Vance Khoo, 23, said that Madam Jesudasan lived in the three-room flat with her husband and two children - a son and a daughter - both of whom appeared to be in their 20s. The couple are believed to have another son, but it is not known if he lives with them.

No one was at home when my paper visited yesterday morning. Shower curtains in the kitchen toilet appeared to be stained with blood. A pair of red handprints was also seen on a wall outside the flat. A family photograph placed on a cabinet in the living room showed Madam Jesudasan surrounded by what appeared to be her three children.

Neighbourhood cleaner Samsuri Ahmad, 59, said he sometimes chatted with the victim when they met. Her husband travelled frequently and was rarely at home, he said. Both Mr Khoo and Mr Samsuri said they had never seen her quarrelling with her sons.

Madam Jesudasan is said to have been killed in a bedroom. The suspect remained in the flat until the authorities arrived, said Shin Min Daily News. Investigations are ongoing.

A woman has been murdered in a flat in Bukit Batok and her son has been arrested.

The woman, 56-year-old Mallika Jesudasan, was found dead in her apartment at Block 248 Bukit Batok Avenue 5 just after midnight on Monday (28 May).

Her elder son, Sujay Solomon Sutherson, 31, has been charged for the murder.

Madam Mallika, a former public relation coordinator, was found dead with neck injuries, The Straits Times newspaper reported. She is believed to be a divorcee living in the apartment with her three children.

Some neighbours heard a commotion on Monday evening. According to one, identified only has Madam C Leong in the newspaper, screams in Tamil could be heard just after midnight.

“I couldn't understand what the woman was saying and I didn't think it was urgent, as I hear their family quarrelling quite often,” Mdm Leong told the newspaper. Police later received a call for help at about 12.20am.

When officers arrived, they were kept outside the unit by Sujay. The man, who is said to have a history of mental illness, allowed them to question him. But Sujay did not let the rest of his family to leave the home. Halfway through their questioning, Sujay tried to flee but was stopped and arrested.

Saw Win, another neighbour, also said that he normally hears shouts coming from Madam Mallika’s unit. However, despite the turbulence, other neighbours described the family to be warm, friendly and loving.

Mdm Mallika, who also has son and a daughter, used to be an employee of the Ministry of Education as well as a customer service officer, The Straits Times said. A further check into her Facebook profile shows that she had posted many cheerful photographs with her children.

On Facebook, Mdm Mallika, who said she graduated from St. Margaret’s Secondary School, described herself to be someone who is “Quiet by nature and like(s) spending time with God whenever time permits”.

Investigations in the case are are ongoing.

Psychiatric evaluation for Bukit Batok murder suspect

Sujay Solomon Sutherson, who was charged with the murder of his mother last week was ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluation at the medical centre of Changi Prison.

The 31-year-old is said to have killed the 56-year-old public relations coordinator, Madam Mallika Jesudasan, on the night of May 27.

The mother of three, which includes Sutherson, was found with neck injuries in the family's flat in Block 248, Bukit Batok East Avenue 5, reported The Straits Times.

His aunt has since hired Mr N. Screenivasan and Mr S. Balamurugan of Straits Law to represent her nephew.

After the mention in a district court, Mr Balamurugan said that Sutherson was in fine spirits considering the circumstances of the situation.

The next mention is on June 26.

If found guilty of murder, he will face the death penalty.
