Let's get the facts right first.
Investigations revealed that on the same day at about 6pm, while the victim was watching television in the living room with her children, the accused confronted the victim over family issue and a dispute subsequently broke out between them.
The victim wanted to leave the house and picked up her house keys to open the padlock to the gate. However, the accused stood in front of her and questioned her as to where she was going. As the victim was unable to get passed the accused, she then walked into the kitchen to prepare dinner. Whilst doing so, the victim made a call to the police informing that the accused refused to let her leave the house.
Upon hearing this, the accused got angry and pulled the victim's hair from the back. The accused then grabbed a knife from the kitchen counter and started stabbing the victim over her chest and shoulder. The accused also slashed the victim over her arms and legs. When the accused realized that the knife was bent, he threw it aside and picked up a larger knife. The accused then continued stabbing and slashing the victim. The victim pleaded with the accused to stop but her pleas were ignored.
At about 6.30pm, a neighbour heard loud commotion from the victim's unit and decided to go over to check. He saw a set of keys hung in the keyhole of the padlock to the gate of the victim's unit. The neighbour then opened the gate and entered the victim's unit. Therein, he saw the victim squatting on the kitchen floor in a pool of blood and the accused's back facing him.
As the neighbour walked towards the kitchen, the accused turned and faced him. The neighbour saw that the accused holding a knife in his hand. At this time, the victim then uttered some words which the neighbour could not make out. The accused suddenly turned towards her and stabbed the victim's back three times. The neighbour tried to talk to the accused to ask him to stop but the accused walked towards him holding the knife in his right hand at face level. The neighbourthen fled towards his house and called for police assistance.
Whilst the accused was distracted by the neighbour, the victim took the opportunity and escaped into the kitchen toilet. However, the accused came into the toilet and continued stabbing and slashing the victim. At one point, the accused attempted to saw the victim's neck with the knife but the victim managed to push the accused away. The accused then used his leg to step on the victim's neck but the victim put up a struggle and kicked the accused in the groin. The accused then stopped his attack and left.
Shortly after, the accused returned to the toilet. The accused then saw the victim was still alive and he continued stabbing and slashing the victim. At this juncture, the victim's elder son came and told the accused to stop but the accused replied that "No, she must die, she must not live, I must kill her." The accused then continued to stab and slash the victim.
The victim was warded from 30 September 2007 till 18 October 2007. She was noted to have sustained the following injuries:
1. Multiple deep lacerations to chest, back, neck, face, left shoulder requiring surgical repairs
2. Massive left haemothorax due to lacerated internal mamillary artery and vein, fracture rib requiring chest tube drainage and surgical thoracotomy
3. Right forearm deep laceration, requiring surgical repair
4. Right 3rd, 4th and 5th finger laceration, first dorsal webspace laceration requiring surgical repair
5. Left upper limb lacerations and cut left extensor digitorum communis muscle and partial cut tendon of left triceps requiring surgical exploration and repair
6. Right ear stab wound with cut cartilage requiring toilet and suture.
The accused did voluntarily cause grievous hurt to the victim by means of a knife with blade measuring 18 cm in length, an instrument used as a weapon of offence likely to cause death, by using the said knife to stab and slash the victim.
In subsequent posts, we shall see how the accused managed to get out of this "bloody mess" (pun intended), smelling sweet and innocent, by submitting falsehoods unchallenged in court.
