Aside from the reasons you give, there is really no reason to revolt. Even in N.korea, where people are already being pushed to their limits, we have not heard of any major uprising there. Of course, the govt there may have censor any revolt that we know of but the N.Korea is smart. They know the people is highly dependent on the N.K govt for food so if you revolt, you will go hungry.

Singapore works pretty much the same way. We don't get called nanny state for nothing. Singaporeans literally depend on the govt to solve all their mundane problems. That's is why some people still vote for PAP even don't they don't like their policies because they fear once PAP lose power, they will lose everything that they build up for.

SAF is a citizen army....true the paper generals are neutered....unlikely we'll see a military coup....that is also why these generals never stay at the top for long....but likewise the army will be reluctant if used against us citizens.

There will be no military coups in Singapore, because the military top brass in Singapore are well-fed by the establishment and they are scholar bookworms.

Also, the face of the Chief of Army, Chief of Defence Force etc. keeps changing as the SAF Overseas scholarship keeps churning out new replacements.

It will be unlike Thailand or Indonesia, where the generals have real political clout and guns to back it up.

That is when you are looking from the position of the tax-payer, it is bad because you pay more tax but from the point of view of the govt, when you want to discourage the outflow of economic activity, it has its merits. All tax regimes which capture world wide income has this intention, except that in the case of the United States, they have limited patience to negotiate double taxation agreements with all foreign countries on a reciprocal basis unless they view it as very strategic.
