I am from Malaysia. I was working in Singapore for more than 10 years before I packed my bag and my family to return home.
When I first starting working in Singapore, my family really love this country. Everything was excellent. We were at the point to decide whether to become a Singaporean. It used to be very difficult to hire foreigner workers. We have to write in to justify why. But we have no complain. Only about 10% of my company workforce are foreigners. We enjoyed the environment. We have lots of Singaporean friends
But things begin to change rapidly. We were so surprised to see so many people coming in from all over. It is as if someone just turn on the tap and the flow just keep flowing uncheck.
What make us decided to pack our bag and go home , you may ask ? One day, I met a Singaporean friend who has just been retrenched. He used to work as an IT support in one of the school. He was contracted by one of the local company who won the tender to provide IT support to all schools. He was earning about S$2,000 then. He was retrenched because his company lost the re-tender to a MNC. What this MNC did was amazing. They managed to hire workers form Johor Baru at S$1,200 a month. These workers will come by motorbike every morning and go home at night. We were all wondering how can this happen ?
From then on, everything goes downhill very rapidly. The final straw came when I was sent to attend to a MNC. I was stunned as I walked into the office. More than 70% of the staff are foreign workers. Where are the Singaporeans ? I told myself it is time to go.
It was with a very sad heart that we pack our bag and go home. We have so many Singaporean friends and fond memories. I hope things can turn around for the better.
