When I heard from a friend working in the civil service that there might be a change in the cabinet this week, I was quietly hoping that Prime Lee Hsien Loong will make use of the opportunity to trim the cabinet by removing the dead wood to reduce government expenditure during this economic downturn.

I was bitterly disappointed and flabbergasted that save for one departure - Dr Lee Boon Yang, there will be one new Senior Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister in Prime Minister’s Office in addition to the present incumbents.

According to the Straits Times (read article here), Mr Teo Chee Hean will be appointed as Deputy Prime Minister; Professor S Jayakumar will relinquish his appointment as Deputy Prime Minister and be appointed as Senior Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office while Ms Lim Hwee Hua will become the third Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office.

Why does our honorable Mr Lee Hsien Loong, who is the highest paid Prime Minister in the world need 2 Senior Ministers, 2 Deputy Prime Ministers, 1 Minister Mentor and 3 Ministers in his office to help him govern a small nation of only 4.5 million people? Will he be handicapped in any way by having less ministers to assist him?

Mr Lee should have sacked the underperforming ministers such as his father MM Lee for GIC’s disastrous performance, DPM Wong for the Home Ministry’s failure to find Mas Selamat and the two Ministers in his office for..well doing nothing. This will save the government a tidy sum of a few million dollars a year which can be channeled to the help the poor and needy in our society.

The new appointment holders - 1 SM and 1 Minister in PMO (Jayakumar relinquish his DPM post to Teo Chee Hean and this was not taken into consideration) will cost taxpayers almost S$5 million dollars a year.

Disinformation, disinformation, disinformation. That's all you oppos know. You should go and write for the Sinapore Democrats.

The PMO is also a ministry with subjects. With more subjects assumed by the PMO, more ministers are needed. It is the same in Malaysia that is why the de-facto law minister is minister in the Prime Minister's Department.

SM Goh has his own subjects. SM Jayakumar has also got his own subjects. The two DPMs also have their own ministries to run.

Lim Swee Say fills a role which has been filled since the days of Lim Chee Onn - labour leader with a cabinet voice. He could have ben like Lim Chee Onn or Ong Teng Cheong - Minister without Portfolio. But PM Lee decided it would be better to park him in PMO.

Of course if you prefer, PM Lee can split PMO into 6 more ministries. Then PMO need not have so many ministers.

But all this does not matter to oppos. All they want are criticism opportunity.

Well you appear just as good at telling half truths. Yes WKS, TCH,and LSS have ministries/ntuc, however lots of overlap even amongst WKS and TCH as both have 2nd ministers helping them.

As for GCT, SJ and LBH; all 3 basically appear to have little to do in substance but are paid multi million $$$ salaries. And let's not even look at MM's role and his huge salary.

This whole system is PAP bullshit, to protect their own kind.

If you just wanted to say that you want a Noah's Ark establishment as your government, then just state it as it is, Cas888. You don't have to resort to such 'reasoning', and make us look like we were born yesterday.

Adolf Hitler was in the habit of appointing people who could not stand each other to vague portfolios in his chancellery which overlapped. These people would then be mutually suspicious and would direct all their energies at each other rather than at Hitler.

I'm not saying this information is in any way shape or form related to the observations in thie thread.

Check and balance lah. Now our senior SM will have to look over his shoulders to see if ah neh is shining or not.

All these are excuses to pay their loyalists more money.

Also they can get more DPMs and SMs to stand in GRCs as anchors. Hoping it will increase their chances of winning.

It's not a question of "need". It's a simple case of the "clan" looking after their own kind.

Singapore is run like a family business and in companies owned by prominent families, it is very common to see very senior positions created for family members who pretty much do bugger all every day.

Singapore is no different. The pappies take care of their own needs before all else. The peasants gather the morsels that are left over in the form paltry amounts of New Singapore shares, cpf top ups etc.

The handouts are insignificant but it are sufficient to convince 66.6% that the pappies are worth having around for another 5 years.

What a pathetic excuse for a country. Singaporeans deserve the govt they get though. They have nobody to blame but themselves.

“We have a practical people whose culture tells them that contention for the sake of contention leads to disaster. I have said this on many a previous occasion; that had the mix in Singapore been different, had it been 75% Indians, 15% Malays and the rest Chinese, it would not have worked. Because they believe in the politics of contention, of opposition. But because the culture was such that the populace sought a practical way out of their difficulties, therefore it has worked.”
- Lee Kuan Yew, 1985
