Thanks for the info. Phanom Penh is one place I seriously considered when LOS get too crowded. The other place is Vientiane.US$60K will buy me a 20m x 4m, 3-storeyed, 6-bedroom apartment in Phnom Penh, add maybe 30K for a condo.
At the moment there's no visa required for Asean citizens and 1-year mutiple-entry visa costs US$275, and applying for 1 is as easy as going to your nearest travel agent.
Although cost of living has in the past few years gone up, Phnom Penh is still very affordable for Singaporeans. Note that I said Phnom Penh, the rest of the country is considerably cheaper.
Just some examples:
Housing - I rent a 3 bedroom, unfurnished apartment for US$150. Utilities come to $30 per month.
Transportation - you can buy a 10 year old Camry for $15K, or move around in taxis ($1 flag-down), or tuk-tuk ($1 up),or motodop (%0.50 up).
Cigarettes - cheaper than DFS. Winston US$5 per carton. Marlboro USD$10+ per carton. There are cheaper locally made ones atUSD 3 per carton
Alcohol - a alcoholic's paradise. A ctn of Angkor or Anchor beer at US$11. A mug of beer at the cheaper outlets can cost aslittle as $2 per jug. At the girlie bars it costs $1.50,a mug.At the high end ones, $5 per small bottle (Darlin Darlin at Naga, e.g.)
Food - if you cook, dirt cheap. Fresh water fishes like patin (live), snakeheads (live) is like $2 per kg, sea fishes tend to be slightly more expensive, but of course the groupers and exotic fishes cost more.
Pork is cheap, so is beef, but goat is not easily available although there are small Muslim pockets in the city where you can get them.
Eating out? From dirt cheap to expensive and every level in between.
I reckon one can live here quite comfortably, not luxuriously, on US$1,000 / month.
Bit this is only my take.

imo, malaysia is the best country for sinkies to establish a 2nd home. there's no need to abandon sg entirely, but johor is so near and liberal with entry requirements for sinkies that the extra space and fresher air offer great relief for the rat race in sg. it's a win-win for ml and sg.
great minds think alot bro! Laos is more similar to Thai and less havoc than Cambodia......good place to retire.....reminds me of old Siam. Thanks for the info. Phanom Penh is one place I seriously considered when LOS get too crowded. The other place is Vientiane.
Bro LOS will never be too crowded la. Thais highly protect themselves and their own interests unlike Sinkapore. Its the best place on earth and you are considering Killing Fields?

Bro joe but why am i seeing an increasing prescence of so many foreigners in thailand. Like russians in jotian and u know indians in khao san rd when i was there kept on pestering farangs to make suits.Middle easterners and africans are also there. The chinese have sort of blended into the culture and have been there a long time but i must say the bkk actually has quite a large number of foreigners over there but of course overall everything is done in thai.
you ARE funny...
Or you can make funny faces across the Straits to them and they can do nothing to you.
Ah nehs (tinker tailors included), mid east blokes aplenty in lower sukuhumvit sois. Met 2 yanks recently, teaching in some Isaan university (and doing consultancy on the side, "cash" business to avoid paper trail or conflict of interest). Both had this interesting conspiracy theory: Especially with the mid east fellas, this was outcome of some 'trade off' with Uncle Sam after military coup ousting Taksin. As an ally, Uncle Sam didn't take too kindly to same. Imho, this is just yanks talking big without substantiatingincreasing prescence of so many foreigners in thailand.
