Men in Greece must serve 9 months in the military if they are older than 18. Women can volunteer for service but it is not mandatory. But if they do, they get to dress up all in white and stand proudly alongside their male counterparts.

During WWII Czech women served as medical personnel, phone operators, and anti-aircraft gun crews proving themselves beyond worthy. Today they are an important part of the Czech Armed Forces and are highly regarded, especially those serving in the Air Force. Talk about earning your wings.

Ukraine has the highest % of women soldiers in the world.
A whopping 25% of those serving for Ukraine are women, with almost 13% of active members being women and 7% of these serving as officers. Though there are no females among the ranks of generals, Ukraine does count 12 female colonels. Given the low pay for much of contractual military service jobs, men have largely refused the work with 44% of the overall count thus being women. Certainly a reason to salute!

However, women are known to have disguised themselves as men to fight in the Balkan Wars and WWI, and by WWII partisan units allowed female soldiers to serve in combat and as medical. Though then ditched, this allowance has recently become practice again for Serbia with the professionalization of the army. Sunglasses included if you sign up.
