Chitchat What sort of city would you like Singapore to be?

Instead all we have is individuals pushing their personal agendas.

My agenda and vision is clear for all to see: The formation of a superb education system and leading the ignoramus out of their predicament. Folks thinking for themselves instead of letting others doing the thinking for them.

It's like playing the piano, learning all the rules and then breaking all of them.

I have two dogs. I trained both of them to do certain tricks.

One learns the trick in a couple of hours. The other takes weeks to catch on.

Education does not work miracles no matter how good it is. A good gene pool is required in order to produce results.

Singaporeans are not Jews. We are not the chosen race.

I totally agree, which is why I feel the need to re-post this again (post #46):
The geographic location of Singapore is such that it is the fate of the inhabitants of this small island-city-state to be exploited by the "elite" Ang Mohs (including the Jews who control, or at least support, them) and/or Japs. ;)
And because of the lack of slaves here roughly two hundred years ago, the British decided to import many times more slaves from southern China; and this policy of importing talented foreign slaves (or "foreign talents") has been maintained by the successors of the British, i.e. the PAP. ;)
And once again, to slave or not to slave?
That is the question. ;)

Again some airy, fairy suggestion with nothing concrete. "Education" is simply a means to an end. What we get in the end requires leadership and vision. What is the vision? Nobody has an answer. That is why Singapore is fucked.

If it's a vision you want, then you should ask a shaman in Peru to give you one.

Reboot the education system and the country will fix itself. Remove streaming, remove scholarships. Reduce class size to 25. Remove Admin functions from teachers. Remove "O" and "A" levels completely and replace with IB. Remove political decisions from education policy. Relook the entire curriculum and remove old subjects and add new ones. Let the GEU in MOE take over curriculum planning. Merge all secondary schools into 3 mega learning institutes like the ITEs and call them RI, ACS and SJI.

Now every school will truly be a good school.

If there was someone who truly believed the country had a great future and had a plan to make it happen, that person would already be out there inspiring the rest of us.

Be realistic! What great future is there for a small island? Just take a look at this list of island countries and check out those with more or less the same land mass as Singapore. None of them are great, except maybe for Malta.

The only option for Singapore is to merge with some other bigger country. The advantages we can bring to the negotiation table are: Singapore's relatively good geographical location near the equator and in East Asia, well developed infrastructure (except maybe the MRT), and Singapore's younger population educated with passable English.

I don't think Singapore can merge back with Malaysia. I just think it's impossible. The differences are too huge. We can't merge with Indonesia definitely because Malaysia will not like it. Merging with Brunei, the Philippines, Thailand or Vietnam doesn't benefit us in any way. Merging with China will only invite hatred from our neighboring countries because of China's claim in the South China Sea, and most of us don't tolerate PRCs very well. Merging with South Korea or Japan will be hard because of the gulf in the languages. Merging with Burma, Bangladesh, India or North Korea is crazy.

So we are left with the English speaking countries to choose from. We can't go back to Britain because we know how inept the British are during the Japanese Occupation. It is also a dwindling empire, and the British accent is awkward and smacks of aristocracy. Merging with Australia doesn't really offer us anything in terms of security, and Indonesia and Australia aren't exactly good neighbors. Merging with New Zealand doesn't advantage us because we can't rear cows as a cash crop in Singapore. Merging with arctic Canada is meaningless because we can't bring their cold air to our tropic island.

And so we are left with the USA, and merging with the USA makes the perfect logical choice. The USA needs a permanent presence in East Asia to maintain its superpower status and to contain China, and Singapore offers it a good location to base its military presence. I am sure our ASEAN neighbors will appreciate it. But Singapore offers the USA more, not just militarily, but economically as well with our port and airport services. In return, the USA offers us their entrepreneurial culture and education system. I am hopeful that the infusion of American education and talents will transform Singapore into one of the the most vibrant and democratic cities in the world.

ur trolling arent u,i try to take it seriously especially when people write walls of text but half the things u say just leave me feeling incredulous.

Now every school will truly be a good school.

Every school will be a good school if they can define what to teach less and how the students could learn more. Then again, that can only happen after we have thinking schools and a learning nation! Teehee...

The current PAP leadership does not know what to do next.

i don't blame them, someone broke the crystal ball. corporate retreat to the mountains. or bring the mountains to them.

imo, singapore lost a lot of technical skills in the pursuit of finance and other industries. if the future is one of robots, AI, quantum machines etc, then i see singapore's future as being the service center for the world of these technologies. We do not need to be the leaders and inventors in the field. we can be the best after-sales service and support specialist/center, dispatching our engineers and technicians for service jobs throughout the world. 3D printing could allow us to be the spare-parts capital of the world. singapore can adopt and modify, as 2nd movers, existing technologies of the future rather than having to be the creators and inventors.

the 5 stars on our flag should represent 5 overseas economic bastions of Singapore from which we service the world's machines and robots. north america, UK, india, china and Bangkok. 5 singapore-towns (temasek owned residences and offices, TCM clinics, SG intern'l schools) will be created, special benefits (housing, health and education) to Singaporeans and PRs, but revamped tax law to claw back overseas income.

eventually, only the young and old will be left on sunny Singapore island as the rest of us work and live in the 5 expansions. education and child raising will be the sole responsibility of the State. parents fuck and then fuck off to their jobs, leaving their offsprings at one of the local mega learning institutions. parents need a permit to have children if they fail to meet certain economic criteria (if you earn 24k a year, dont have 5 fucking children)

we could possibly merge with JB. adopt the sultan as our head of state and give malaysia the finger. and then maybe negotiate for a 100 year lease of the Riau islands from Indonesia. thus reviving the Riau Sultanate.

we need new subjects for secondary school. we need to drop the O and A levels. and burn all 10 year series books in the great book burning of Singapore.

from wiki - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secondary_education_in_the_United_States

Many states require that courses in the "core" areas of English, science, social studies, and mathematics every year although others allow more choice after 10th grade. The majority of high schools require four English credits to graduate.
Generally, three science courses are required. Biology, chemistry, and physics are usually offered. Courses such as physical and life science serve as introductory alternatives to those classes. Other science studies include geology, anatomy, astronomy, health science, environmental science, and forensic science.
High school mathematics courses typically include pre-algebra, algebra I, geometry, algebra II w/trigonometry classes. Advanced study options can include precalculus, calculus, statistics, and discrete math generally with an opportunity to earn Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) accreditation. Usually, only three math credits are required for graduation (although four is recommended).
English/Language classes are usually required for four years of high school although many schools count journalism, public speaking/debate, foreign language, literature, drama, and writing (both technical and creative) classes as English/Language classes.
Social science classes include world history, U.S. history, government, and economics. Government and economics classes are sometimes combined as two semesters of a year-long course. Additional study options can include classes in law (constitutional, criminal, or international), criminal justice, sociology, and psychology.

That's okay as long as the rest of the world are also the same.

I do believe that the PAP is trying to build Singapore as the most enviable city in the world in the like of New York, Shanghai , HongKong and London.
You will see many similarities in term of current and future plans.

i think finance is easier, also being a money laundering hub and tax haven.and also real estate and rent seeking.....

lets face it america may be the number one technological center in the world, but most of their profits doesnt come from manufacturing or engineering.it comes from finance and banking....america went down the path of financial services and deregulation back in the 80s,90s.......all the money is in banking and finance......capital makes more capital, that is the one and only universal truth.look at the richest and most powerful countries in the world, america, swissland, singapore where does all their money come from?what is their biggest sector?

Your ideas are noble but too vague. What is meant by superb, and superb for who? How are you going to achieve your goals given multiple constraints like limited time spent in classroom, how to allocate finite resources? What kind of teachers do you hire and how to you find them? How do you forge a consensus with parents and other stakeholders as to what is best for the children?

Yeah he's making motherhood statements just like the PAP!! :D

Finance is "easier" for us and everyone else too. And so far the benefits are not trickling down. Jokowi already trying to woo back indon $ via tax amenesty etc.

And finance doesn't provide enough jobs for the average sinkie.
