We in SBF always talk about FT's and new citizens who are unable to adopt our culture. Let's discuss frankly, what do we mean by "A Singapore Culture." Is it our Singlish or the way we dressed or the food we eat, etc?

What are your opinions?

culture is the way a certain people or community view and do things ....basically the way they behave in certain situations and under certain circumstances.

Sinkie culture is the way we do things here in sinkieland.

I would start by saying...kiasuism is part of our culture.....fearful of losing out.

Other people in the other countries are not free from this but we tend to be worse than them.

hi there

1. my take for the 60%: daftness, to be instructed & wait, loved to be poked from the rear, love to apologise & cry in public.

In sports, Singaporeans are truly gungho on soccer (not local soccer) and we excel in swimming. We are not crazy about basketball nor cricket although there are certain minority groups who are keen on them. Singaporeans do not play cricket in neighbourhood estates as what we are seeing now. It builds certain resentment amongst Singaporeans, although playing basketball is pretty common.

singapore has a very complaining culture....but mostly done on Stomp. So nothing improves

If, at the conclusion of this thread, we can't find any positive examples of Singapore culture, should we then agree that it would be a mistake to expect foreigners to adopt Singapore culture. Instead, we should be hoping that they IMPROVE the culture.

singapore has a 'clean and gracious' culture. People dont hawk and spit all over the place, talk loudly and drive dangerously . They dont go around

trying to bed other people's maids. They mostly dont let their spoilt kids treat restaurants as if it was their own private playground.

How's that for starters?

singapoor has a feign 'clean and gracious' culture.

once they are in other country , they do the opposite of the above.

There is some validity that we had developed some progress towards a Singapore Identity before the advent of Muslim fundamentalism and the religious fervour amongst the Christian and Buddhists religions that was a worldwide phenomena.

So that sort of put a halt in the progress due to the suspicions of each race especially after 911 and the strict adherence of Muslim tenets like the wearing of the tudung became a norm. Before that, most Singaporeans do communicate with each other in pidgin Malay, well enough to understadn each other. Now we are more polarised also possibly due to the uprooting of kampungs and Chinese-dominated areas such that now Singaporeans of all races are residing in more or less equal ratios everywhere. Was it good or bad I am not exactly sure but it did not unify all Singaporeans as originally planned.

The only culture I know is kiasu culture. And that infects only the Chinese and Indian sinkies. The Mats however have caught on too.

Everything starts with being kiasu and every sinkie starts life in the kiasu lane, from trying to get into the best play school, then best primary, secondary, JC and university.
