In the event of a confrontation, it is the task of all the branches of the armed forces to keep supply chains going. That's where the billions of dollars of defense spending comes into play.
Nothing is guaranteed when it comes to conflict but to just roll over and surrender before the first shot is fired because the task of defense is difficult is not the way to run a country.
Don't forget that when it comes to war, it's your assets and the lives of your loved ones that you are defending. The PAP won't be around forever and probably won't last your lifetime. However, your assets and your childrens assets are at risk in the long term if no attempts are made to secure Singapore's existence. Don't confuse politics with national defense. They are entirely different issues.
As for the policy of appeasement between neighbors I'm afraid it only works when you're negotiating from a position of strength. Many countries have learned this the hard way. Singapore's position of making any conflict as costly as possible for its potential aggressors is the correct strategy to take.
By all means question the execution of the this strategy but to change tack and relieve the country of the cost of defense spending will spell disaster. Once the enemy smells blood, it's already too late.
