Does it serve the purpose?
How much of the fresh water are being used?
What the point of having it when they start pumping out when rain is imminent?
Is it achieving less than 50% of its original intention?
50 years ago Singapore never have so many flash floods why is it happening so frequently now?
Can The Messiah help PUB admit or at least point out the mistakes of blocking the river mouth before LKY up lorry?

....ssshh of cause cannot admit otherwise the whole nation will go bonker or KPKB non stop. Just let it be as it only happen once in 50 yrs...oops sori its once every raining season.

The barrage is LKY's pride and joy.

It is LKY's one-upping against Dr Albert Winsemius, the Dutch economic advisor, when they had a casual conversation while looking over the Singapore River. Dr Winsemius claimed that the foul-smelling blackish Singapore River can never be made clean. LKY took it upon himself to prove Dr Winsemius wrong.

It took about 40 plus years. But the Marina Barrage is a 画蛇添足 instead of a 锦上添花.

It is a case of LKY's pride overriding logic and common sense. Now, besides the barrage, constant 'ponding' can also be added to LKY's pride and joy.

The only purpose of the barrage is to flood Sillypore.
Other than that it doesn't serve much purpose in generating electricity like any other dam.

it serves to remind sinkies that they are ball-less fuck who will wait for 2016 and even the incompetent low life PAP can make you bend down to screw you.

I wrote in a previous thread that I have not seen flooding that often in my younger days 30 years ago when the rain was much heavier. I remember that there were times where torrential rain fell over days continuously and there were no flood in orchard or other parts of town. However, with just 2 hours of heavy rain nowadays we see flood at several part of Singapore.

I kind of suspect that the marina barrage has something to do with our current situation but hoping that some bro here with the knowledge can shed some light.

It is to enable the country not to be dependent upon Malaysia for its water supply.

The floods are small price to pay. The gains far outweigh the problems of flooding.

What will happen when an old fart (who think he is extremely smart) try controlling (aka stopping) a dragon's mouth from spilling water from the river back into the sea?

None of the saved fresh water goes to the households and what gains are you uttering?

On top of that we paid millions to have occasional small floods!

In the event that unforeseen events occur and the Malaysian supply of water is cut off before the 2061 expiry of the agreement, the water in the barrage will be able to take up the slack.

You also have to realise that water consumption does not remain static. It will increase over time. The barrage is an integral part of long term self sufficiency.

Surely you would not want to be in a position where the country can be easily blackmailed by its neighbors.

Marina Barrage plan is to block sea water from coming in to Sg river. In 10~15 year SG gov hope that the SG river will slowly change from salty water to fresh water. If the river become fresh water NEA estimate it can support about 10% SG water usage. Now already 5 year the water still very salty.
How long it will take to become fresh water ???? No exact answer.

The Marina Barrage (Chinese:滨海堤坝) is a dam in Singapore built at the confluence of five rivers, across the Marina Channel[3] between Marina East and Marina South. It was officially opened on 1 November 2008. It was Singapore's fifteenth reservoir. It provides water storage, flood control and recreation. It won a 2009 AAEE award.

Purpose[edit]

The S$226 million project turns Marina Bay and Kallang Basin into a new downtown freshwater Marina Reservoir. It provides water supply, flood control and a new lifestyle attraction.
By keeping out seawater, the barrage forms Singapore’s 15th reservoir and first reservoir in the city. Marina Reservoir, together with the future Punggol and Serangoon reservoirs, will increase Singapore’s water catchment areas from half to two-thirds of Singapore’s total land area.
Marina Barrage also acts as a tidal barrier to keep seawater out, helping to alleviate flooding in low lying areas of the city such as Chinatown, Jalan Besar and Geylang.[4]
When it rains heavily during low-tide, the barrage’s crest gates will be lowered to release excess water from the reservoir into the sea. If heavy rain falls during high-tide, the crest gates remain closed and giant drainage pumps are activated to pump excess water out to sea.
As the water in the Marina Basin is unaffected by the tides, the water level will be kept constant, making it ideal for all kinds of recreational activities such as boating, windsurfing, kayaking and dragonboating etc.
Impact[edit]

The building of the Marina Barrage required the relocation of Clifford Pier from Collyer Quay to Marina South (see Marina South Pier).
It has proved to be a tourist attraction. Marina Barrage is open for viewing 24/7. The information counter is open from 9.00am to 6.00pm on weekdays and 10.00am to 8.00pm on weekends. Tours for a maximum capacity of 80 people to the Visitor Centre can be arranged prior to arrival.
Awards[edit]

The Marina Barrage was conferred the Superior Achievement Award[4] - the highest honour of the competition for the best project entry - at the AAEE Annual Awards Luncheon held in Washington, DC, USA on 6 May 2009. The Marina Barrage beat 33 other entries to take home the top prize in this year's competition organised by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers[5] (AAEE), becoming the second project outside of USA to win the award, in the last decade[6].

I cannot image what is the Eco damage of doing this....likewise the reclaimation of land in sinkieland.
Even a structure like the causeway has environmental impact on the surrounding waters
