I don't think there was anything wrong with my attitude or tone. In fact, if I recall correctly, I said "Excuse me please".
But I do concede that the elderly person may not have heard me or may not have understood English.
I'm old enough to have learnt that we need to give way to people, to behave appropriately in public places and to show consideration to others.
If anyone chooses to do more than stare when I tell him pleasantly to "excuse me please", they can do what they think is appropriate.
Your point about giving old folks due respect is precisely the reason why I started this thread. I thought the same way, but discovered that many of them don't behave in a manner that commands respect. Perhaps that is something else I learnt.
