For the rest of his life, Lim Ah Liang, 33, would have almost no chance of stepping outside a prison.
But on Wedneday morning, Lim, who is serving a life sentence for manslaughter, was given one hour out of his jail term to attend his mother’s funeral.
At 9.30am, Lim Ah Liang arrived at his mother’s wake in Sin Ming Avenue handcuffed and escorted by six prison officers, according to Shin Min Daily News.
His mother Lim Zuan Bao had collapsed outside her home while on her way to see her son in prison. Some believe that the 60-year-old woman had died of sorrow.
Lim fell on his knees the moment he arrived at the funeral parlour.
Breaking down and sobbing, he approached his mother’s body while muttering sutras and pouring out his heart for the elderly woman.
The former masseur had been sentenced to life imprisonment in 2007 for killing businessman Ho Kien Leong.
He had stabbed Mr Ho, who ran a massage service, 13 times.
Lim was also known to be providing sexual services to his clients and had been involved in a relationship with Mr Ho before falling out with him, according to The Straits Times.
Wrecked with the loss of his mother, Lim knelt beside the coffin, kowtowing to her nine times before offering the traditional incense and prayers.
He continued to kneel by the coffin for the next 45 minutes, sobbing and gently caressing her forehead, worn and creased from years of toil as a dishwasher.
The scene of a wayward son seeing his mother for the last time brought tears to the eyes of many at the wake.
Lim looked vastly different from when he was convicted.
He had sported long hair dye blond when he was convicted, but now dons black-rimmed spectacles with a head of close-cropped hair.
“He learnt about Buddhism in prison and has grown wiser now,” said retiree Mr Chen, one of the family’s friends present at the wake.
By 10.30am, Lim’s time was up as prison officers moved to take him back.
Kissing his mother one last time on her forehead, he kowtowed nine more times before he was taken away back to prison.
Madam Lim’s body was cremated on Wednesday afternoon.
