Contrary to popular belief about ability of bulletproof vest to stop bullets, the reality is that such vests would only stop bullets fired at close range - within 30meters - the range of hand guns as such bullets have low velocity speeds that is not enough to penetrate thru the ceramic plates.
At 150m when the assassin's AR rifle fired a shot, the 5.56mm spinning bullet would had achieve velocity enough to drill a hole thru the bulletproof vest & deep into the Human body behind the vest....
Such would be known by the assassin, even if he had no military training but he did join a shooting club which would had shared information about sniping, & due to his interests in such, would have advisors to assist, watch movies or documentaries or books on such subject.
It would be far fetched to believe that he just woke up one morning & decided to terminate Mr. Trump. He is NOT some moronic lone wolf or suicide bomber, proven by his actions.
He would have a PLAN, which means detailed study on HOW he would achieve success in his heinous act, perhaps weeks or even months ahead of this tragic event. Americans are known to be meticulous in detailed planning, as he was said to be intelligent, or his INFLUENCER was equally such.
A) Mr Trump's rally schedule is often known in advance, so that his organizers would gather crowds at known locations, & thus the PLAN was formed.
B) As he had discovered where & when Mr. Trump will be visiting the site, he would had sourced for the best site for success, with his knowledge about Secret Service perimeters...using maps or even readily available satellite photos, google maps, etc to work out the specifics for his assassination attempt..
C) The assassin would had studied the security situation from other sites to conduct his attempt - security perimeters, which incredibly the Secret Service was said that they do not cover any security outside of a defined perimeter, probably they perceived that an attack would come from the audience either with a hand gun or bomb vest, & discounted any other attempts, ...
....which was similar to FBI's handling of 911 attack - they complacently laughed at the suggestion that terrorists would fly a plane into a building when there were questions raised on why the terrorists were only interested in flying a plane & not in landing the aircraft....
D) As the assassin was a member of a shooting club, he would had CALIBRATED his iron sights to 150m for effective success, & trained upon that range regularly to perfect his shots....
E) The building where the assassin used as his sniping site on the roof is a existing biz entity, with staff & workers. He would had to rehearse climbing up to the roof without detection for a few times, or find an excuse to cover his rehearsals if discovered by workers.
The point is - we may not know his motive yet, but we now know that a PLAN exists, so WHO helped him in such a detailed plan to terminate Mr. Trump, as he had no military training?

In today's heighten sense of security by celebrities & high profile politicians for self preservation against the few whom are insane & suicidal, NONE - with good or bad intentions - would be able to get within 5 meters of them, & accepted, understood & complied by the sane, even if personal interaction is important, as each life is precious & means something special to another, so too to those around them & they would want NONE hurt in such chaos should it happen....
To get CLOSE within them & harm them, it would have to be someone whom they trusted highly, the way the great PM of India - Indira Gandhi, close associate of the awesome & enlightened Mahatma Gandhi, was assassinated by her highly trusted Sikh bodyguards in 31st Oct 1984, among many other highly regarded political figures & celebrities Worldwide in the past & present centuries of Humankind civilization alone....
Thus careful scrutiny of those around them in daily life is crucial for one & others to survive....

bulletproof vests have different ratings. I would think most VIPs would be wearing level 3 and 4. Those can stop a 5.56 or even a 7.62 round.
By all means then, wear the best rated bullet proof vest, & take a chance against scientific evidences & critically, against a well trained assassin, as well as against the insane & suicidal whom may just get lucky.....
In REALITY, it WILL NOT be a bullet that would kill ideologies, from the sane or insane, as proven in Civilized Humanity's battles against such, & much, & in relatable recent times - Radical Islam or extreme left or right beliefs, or even by LOUD but minority groups that presume militancy- murder of others & innocents, will ensure their foolish causes will rule our World....

The Secret Service should have surveyed and cleared all the surrounding rooftops, within a 200 m radius.
Highly unlikely they'll ever be put to that test.
Brave as they were, the secret service was found to be less than professional and not entirely effective. They could've done better and deserve the harsh criticism.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Columbus Division of Police officers shot and killed a man less than a mile away from the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
Fraternal Order of Police President Brian Steel — who supervises the lodge for central Ohio — confirmed that multiple on-duty CPD bike officers fired shots at a suspect Tuesday evening. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office said an adult male was shot and killed, the Associated Press reported.

Local NBC affiliate WTMJ-TV noted that the shooting happened at 14th and Vliet streets, where two men were reported fighting with knives. The scene was less than a mile away from the Fiserv Forum, where the Republican National Convention is being held. Steel confirmed that about 40 CPD officers were in Milwaukee to assist with event security.
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson’s chief of staff, Jeff Fleming, said he didn’t know what led up to the shooting. But he and Alexi Worley, a spokesperson in the convention’s joint command center, said there was nothing to suggest the shooting was related to the convention itself, the AP reported.
No officers were hurt in the shooting, Steel said. No agency had released the identity of the suspect as of 6:40 p.m.
A woman who identified herself as the cousin of the victim said the family was “deeply in tears” that “you let officers come in and do this to him.”

Kenneth Johnson, a volunteer with Friends Without Shelter, said the area is well known among locals for its homeless population that sleeps in tents in a nearby lot — and questioned what an out-of-state officer had been doing at the location.
“They shouldn’t have jurisdiction to be in this area. This isn’t near where the zones are,” Johnson said. “These are tent communities over here, they shouldn’t be over here.”

The FBI used Israeli technology to break into the phone of former US president Donald Trump’s would-be assassin, the Washington Post reports, citing people familiar with the investigation.
Investigators enlisted Cellebrite to hack into the phone of Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel, Pennsylvania, who opened fire at a Trump rally in nearby Butler on Saturday.
Crooks, who used an assault rifle legally purchased by his father 11 years ago, killed one person and critically injured two, and one of his bullets grazed the Republican presidential candidate’s right ear. A US Secret Service sniper shot and killed Crooks on the spot.
The shooter’s phone was recovered from his body and was hacked to help determine his motive, which remains elusive.
While it could otherwise have possibly taken investigators weeks or even months to crack the phone, the Israeli technology enabled them to get the job done in just 40 minutes, the report says.
Cellebrite, which is listed on the NASDAQ, has come under scrutiny from rights groups in the past over the sale of its services to repressive regimes, including Pakistan and Belarus.
Investigators are considering the possibility that Crooks used two phones, after discovering a phone with a dead battery at his home in Bethel Park, where he lived with his parents, the Post said.
The newspaper cites two neighbors and Crooks’ school counselor as saying that Crooks and his parents were normal, with one neighbor describing him as a “quiet, dorky kid” typical of the neighborhood.
The counselor, who worked with the shooter’s older sister, denies reports that Crooks was bullied while at school. He is said to describe Crooks as “quiet,” “intelligent,” “cooperative” and “well-spoken.”
Two people familiar with the situation are cited by the Post as saying that Crooks’ parents, both of whom are licensed social workers, were loving though possibly not attuned to specifics of their son’s life. Two neighbors recall seeing Trump signs on the family’s lawn.
