For every $100 profit ZTE made, probably $70 goes towards American parts suppliers. To enforce sanctions on companies like ZTE means American companies are going to lose more than the Chinese.

In the long run, it will only spur the Chinese to invest more in r&d in order not to be held hostage the again. Losing game for the American both short and long term.

As for tech transfer in exchange for market access, it has always been the norm worldwide.

Huawei launched the P20 devices to a huge media reception. It would seem that all the marketing wasn’t for nothing, as the company sold six million units of the phones in the ten weeks following the devices' launch, according to an official statement.

The P20 phones selling six million in just over two months is definitely impressive. Huawei sold about 39 million smartphones in all of Q1 2018, for some perspective. Of course, sales are split between three devices—the P20 Pro, P20, and P20 Lite. According to the company, this number represents an 81% increase over the P10's sales last year.

“It is Huawei’s unremitting efforts for a better photography experience on smartphones that have pushed up shipments of P20 both at home and abroad," Kevin Ho, Head of Huawei's smartphone division, was quoted as saying.

The P20 phones are hailed for their camera performance—the P20 Pro, in particular, being crowned the best camera device on the planet by DxOMark. Of course, multiple hands-on reviews have cast shadows of doubt on theory since then, but it’s undeniable that the devices offer top-of-the-line cameras.

I simply don't understand the fuss about phone cameras.

When I want to communicate I use my phone.

When I want to take pictures I use my camera.

Almost ANY late model digital camera will be 10x better than a phone at taking pictures and all phones beat a camera hands down when it comes to communicating.

Use the proper tool for the job and all will be well. Imagine if you went to your barber, your car mechanic or your doctor and they used this tool to do the job. I'm pretty sure you'd run a mile.

Ask @Froggy whether he'd recommend a Swiss army knife or a proper screwdriver to screw his screws.

China's Huawei top sponsor of Australian politicians' overseas trips

MELBOURNE/SYDNEY: Chinese telecommunications equipment maker Huawei Technologies Co Ltd is the biggest corporate sponsor of overseas travel for Australian politicians, according to an analysis of travel disclosure registers by an Australian think-tank.
The report comes as several politicians have called for Huawei to be banned from participating in a roll-out of Australia's 5G next-generation communications network, amid fears the company is effectively controlled by the Chinese government.

It also lands amid a low in Sino-Australian relations and intense concern at Chinese influence in Australian politics.
Australia is preparing to pass laws designed to limit China's influence in domestic affairs following criticism by Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull that Beijing was interfering.
The research from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) found Huawei paid for 12 trips by Australian federal politicians to the company's headquarters in Shenzhen, including business class flights, local travel, accommodation and meals, between 2010 and this year, based on politicians' disclosures.
Politicians who took those trips include Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, Trade Minister Steve Ciobo and former Trade Minister Andrew Robb.

Huawei accounted for 12 out of 55 corporate-sponsored trips by federal politicians, the ASPI research found.
Iron ore miner Fortescue Metals Group was the second-largest corporate sponsor, paying for five trips, according to the research, while the biggest non corporate sponsor was the Australia/Israel and Jewish Affairs Council which paid for 44 trips.
Huawei, which denies it is controlled by the Chinese government, is the world's largest maker of telecommunications network equipment and the No. 3 smartphone supplier. It has already been virtually shut out of the giant U.S. market because of national security concerns.
Huawei's Australian spokesman, Jeremy Mitchell, said the company was not doing anything improper.
"We openly invite media, business, think tanks and politicians to visit us and understand us better," Mitchell told the Australian Broadcasting Corp (ABC), which first reported the story.
Three of the politicians who travelled on a Huawei-sponsored trip told the ABC the trips were all-expenses paid study tours to see China's technological growth.
Australian security agencies and Huawei have clashed over worries that the firm's links to China make its hardware a data security risk.
It was blocked on security grounds from supplying equipment to Australia's new broadband network and Australia this month promised hundreds of millions of dollars to ensure Huawei did not build an internet cable between Australia and the Solomon Islands.

Actually the shots put up by Ah Joe is really impressive....it can even go toe to toe with a micro four thirds camera. And its convenient etc for everyday shots. If it wasnt for the fact that it is an Android Iphone system (ie no SD card and 3.5mm jack) I would have bought the P20 pro too,,,,

oh forgot. it runs on android, which is crap. every android phone now tries to look like the iphone x - dual camera position, bezel less, borderless, charging that looks like the lightning port (but it's some usb crap), audio holes at the bottom spread out evenly on both sides, and the upper notch on the otherwise perfect screen. android knockoffs don't need to have the notch, but they copy the notch anyways. the notch is a poor design (due to the front-facing camera) but they all copy the undesirable iphone x notch. if apple smears shit on the phone, android knockoffs will also smear shit on the copies. that's an outright capitulation that the iphone x design is the de facto trend-setter.
