Thio Su Mien Bizzarre Behaviour at RTC Press Conference

Don't forget, during the CNA interview, she claimed that the new exco feel that AWARE has become too diversified in their interests and hence they want to consolidate them; Yesterday at the RTC press conference, they claim that AWARE has become a single issue (i.e. lesbian) organization!

So does AWARE have too many or only one issue of interest?!

Some people are incapable of telling the truth.

The conduct of Thio Su Mien is shocking. I was given to understand that she was forced by others in the church to turn as she started the campaign and did a Ryan Goh.

That's right, she is only a mid tier manager since VPs are a dime a dozen in banks. There are several managers like Josie in DBS who take their religion very seriously. What I find disturbing is how some of these people like to bring their religion into the office. I have personally witnessed the kind of pressure their juniors are put under to conform ie. join in their religious activities. Something I never encountered in my years in the UK (a Christian nation no less).

Agree with you. I have seen this activity locally but not overseas.

AWARE is for women. Lesbians are not women becaue they do not face the same issue as NORMAL women. Lesbians behave like men and thus should join manly orgnisations that accept them. But at the end of the day, lesbians should accept that they are different from normal people and thus find their own organisation.

Why can't you get that into your head?

Lesbians and gays should form their own organisation. Sporns have been kicked in by the pappies for so many years. Women need their own orgs to help each other to face the realities in life.

They can't do that. It's illegal...

That's why they used subversive techniques?

Fully agree.

Only pua tang chwee (pail with water half-filled) christians would do such a thing.

It's disgusting.

Those learned / genuine christians will not do this.

wa lau....why women so troublesome? i think they are just too petty. there are so many impt things to do than to quarrel n fight over the AWARE. We men dun need AMARE.

This is the Comprehensive Sex Education Programs that Thio Su Mien is talking about. It looks alrigh to me and nothing along the lines that Thio claimed it was. In fact if you look at the underlined links, the expected outcome of the program should delight staunch conservatives.

Anyone out there has any light to throw on this program. How did lesbianism get into the program.

The Issue
In 2007 AWARE developed and began conducting Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) workshops in secondary schools and
welfare homes around Singapore. CSE is a holistic sexual education program designed for young women. It aims to replace the silence
and shame associated with sexuality with practical information and skills. By bringing sexuality into the open, young people are more
likely to make wise, realistic, and informed decisions based on principles of human rights and gender equality. Given the potential risks
inherent in sexual activity, we owe it to young people to help them safeguard their own futures. Research shows that comprehensive
sexuality education is effective in providing young women and men with the tools, knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values to make
responsible choices about their sexual health.
The Facts
According to the British Medical Journal (2002),
Several studies show that abstinence-only programs did not reduce the likelihood of pregnancy of women who participated in
the programs, but rather increased it.
Adolescents have suggested that sex education should be more positive with less emphasis on anatomy and scare tactics; it
should focus on negotiation skills in sexual relationships and communication; and details of sexual health clinics should be
advertised in areas that adolescents frequent
Advocates for Youth found when surveying ten countries’ comprehensive sexuality education programs that the programs resulted in
[COLOR="_______"]Delayed sexual initiation
Risk reduction for sexually active youth, including increased condom use, fewer partners, as well as increased abstinence
Reduced incidence of pregnancy or sexually transmitted infections
AWARE’s Voice
AWARE believes that comprehensive sexuality education is a crucial component of any young woman’s formal education. B]y
providing teens with honest and accurate information about STIs, pregnancy, contraceptives, peer pressure, communication and
negotiation skills, and healthy relationships, AWARE believes they will be better prepared to make decisions that are in their best
interest.
AWARE used internationally recognised theories and content to develop their comprehensive sexuality education program. They have
tested and edited the program’s content and seek continuous improvement. The program has been well received by students and
teachers alike in secondary schools and welfare homes around Singapore.
AWARE hopes that all Singaporean students will have access to comprehensive sexuality education, whether through AWARE’s
program or through similar ones. Only when young people are taught accurate and relevant information will they be able to protect
themselves and their peers

Came across this letter to ST. Note the last few paragraph. Seems to me that they are looking at the family as whole. The role of the father and mother in raising a child. How did they end being labelled at supporting lesbianism.

I refer to Alvin Tan’s letter, “Here’s the Singaporean confusion”, from October 31’s Strait Times Forum.
Last week, AWARE hosted a forum titled “Let’s Not Leave Our Boys Behind”. The aim was to discuss the
expectations that Singaporean women and men have of each other.
From the forum it appears that misunderstanding is the primary obstacle preventing stronger relationships
between Singaporeans. Many women believe that men want a partner that is domestic and traditional.
Many men believe women want a partner that is wealthy and chivalrous.
I believe this misunderstanding is perpetuated by such articles as the one Mr. Tan referred to from a
February issue of Straits Times. The article claimed that based on a survey, Singaporean women expect
their partners to carry their handbags, open doors, and pay for dates. In fact, the survey found that,
- Only 24% of the women expect their boyfriends to carry their handbag, while 70% of men do not mind
carrying it.
- Eighty-eight percent of men will open the doors for their girlfriend, while only 50% of women expect
this.
- Seventy-two percent of men will pay the bills on dates most or all of the time, while only 36% of the
women expect this.
Due to this misconception and others, Singaporean women and men feel further alienated from one another.
Present at AWARE’s forum were three counsellors and the director of a dating agency. All emphasized that
communication is essential to a healthy relationship.
The forum also questioned what our society expects of women and men in a larger sense. These societal
expectations contribute to the stress that women and men feel to “play certain roles” when they’re
interacting.
Based on workplace practices and government policies, women are still seen as primary caregivers. They
receive the majority of benefits – and costs – of childrearing. Men, on the other hand, are not afforded
reasonable paternity leave or protections which would allow them to take on a larger part of their children’s
lives.
This results in a Catch-22 where young boys are deprived of male role models in the domestic sphere. They
are led to believe that caring for the family is a woman’s work. It is up to wives and husbands together to
be positive role models to their children and show that both mommy and daddy care for them and the
home.

...lost the plot during the RTC press conference and began a spiel about her life, her achievements, her roles in various organisation etc...

convince, confuse, condemn... anything new? :p

By the same argument, some Gays should join AWARE?

I do not see the gay and lesbian community taking over AWARE. AWARE wasn't even actively promoting Gay and Lesbian rights. NOBODY ASSOCIATES AWARE WITH GAYS AND LESBIANS!

It's only this bunch of idiots who think AWARE is pushing for gay and lesbian rights and wants it overhauled.

Fully agree.

Only pua tang chwee (pail with water half-filled) christians would do such a thing.

wah like you know them so well..are you a Christian yourself?

i dunno about you AWARE sounds like a damn bloody good name to promote public awareness...the NAME is GOOD!!!

I prefer it be used by Christians to promote the Gospel than gays and les to promote their lifestyles to many others who are not even gay or les...

Christianity in UK is dying....they are turning churches into pubs.....sad!

Thio Su Mein's rant has caused some doubts even in those sympathetic to AWARE. My friend is concerned that AWARE is promoting lesbianism as claimed Thio and another friend's main worry is her daughter grew up to be a lesbian! And both are Buddhists and are very tolerant of gay lifestyles

Sounds like Josie would fit in quite comfortanly as a private banker:rolleyes:...btw is Dr Thio even an AWARE member in the first place?...
Apparently Dr Thio lost the plot during the RTC press conference and began a spiel about her life, her achievements, her roles in various organisation etc.

Those present thought she had been co-opted into ex-co at the last minute. She is not even in the ex-co. Very bizarre.

Even more interesting is the talk going around that event organisers are keen to have both Josie and Su Mien as guest speakers to boost attendence. It has nothing to do with substance but pure entertainment.

One only has to look at Josie's CV on the AWARE website to know how far she is detached from AWARE. Let me know if anyone finds anything remotely associated with social and civc endevours or an intention towards it. Note the comment about holding high end parties.

Looks like very short lived ex President of AWARE Claire Nazar's description of Josie and her pussycats appears to be apt - "storm troopers":D
She is an entertainer alright. Thio's very own personal puppet.

Their takeover debacle was a failure due to poor preparation. The Coup reference is most apt as the xtian militia are about as competent as military personnel in running an organization or a country.

Overthrowing rulers and gaining seats of power are far easier than retaining them.

Aiyah that just shows her 'feminist' credentials or more like deficit just like her aunty in law the self proclaimed "feminist mentor" Dr Thio:rolleyes::D
Agree.. I was surprised that she put that on the AWARE website. It has absolutely no link to her role as President of AWARE.

DBS guys tell me that she only the marketing head of the Card Business and does not run the card business.

"Can't we all just get along" - Rodney King
It's been the same old story. Trying to impose one's personal values on other people or group of people, using an association as vehicle, disguised as trying to do good, and the perpetrator actually believes that's good, when nothing is clear is neutral clear-minded as good or evil. Why do some people can't stand other people doing something personal and harmless to others and considered harmless by those who participate with consent? Resort to using personal power and societal influence to stop others or ostracize or even criminalize others? Intolerance and urgue to impose oneself's definition of self-righteousness on others may well the be the de facto biggest hunmanity crime and mental illness.

Her aunty in law, the self proclaimed "feminist mentor" Dr Thio Su Mien appears to be lagi worse...when she was at Drew & Napier she used to conduct these prayer sessions at her office...appeared to create a faction of sorts...well until the former PAP MP Bayi got the better of her and her gang then no choice had to set up her own law firm:D

I've such encounters in Canada. But the perpetrators are students ... from Singapore :p:D:p:D:p:D

Seriously, in first world countries, such people will be sacked for forcing their religious beliefs on their subordinates.
