SINGAPORE: Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam said on Tuesday (May 23) that he has “nothing to hide” about his tenancy for a colonial bungalow along Ridout Road and called the allegations that have emerged on the matter “outrageous”.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Tuesday afternoon that a review would be conducted relating to the rental of two state properties along Ridout Road by Mr Shanmugam and Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.

“This must be done to ensure that this government maintains the highest standards of integrity,” he said in a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday evening, Mr Shanmugam said: “These are public properties. People are entitled to ask questions. I know what I did. I kept to the rules.

“But when questions arise, you know how it works. The government will look into the matter.”

Mr Shanmugam said he had contacted the Prime Minister last week while away on a work trip to suggest an independent review.

This approach is needed “to make sure the system operates with integrity”, he said, adding that doubts about the integrity of ministers cannot be left to fester and be unaddressed.

“I have nothing to hide. We should set out the facts, lay them before parliament and the people. That's the only way to retain trust,” said the minister.

“And when Parliament next meets in July, the questions will be dealt with.”

On why he had asked for an independent review, Mr Shanmugam replied: “We are confident of how we had conducted ourselves so we asked the Prime Minister for an independent review.”

Responding to another question on the allegations that have emerged, the minister said he does not want “to comment too much” on these allegations until the independent review is done.

“But I will say, speaking from a personal perspective, the allegations are outrageous,” he said.

He added that both properties had been "empty for years" when the ministers put in their bids.

“I can see how that without full facts, some people may genuinely have legitimate questions, but there have been some assertions made which go well beyond just asking questions.

“Let the full facts come out, then people can judge for themselves.”

How Many BTO Flats Can You Build On 26 And 31 Ridout Road? The answer is an estimated 1386!

After my post this morning pointing out that 31 Ridout Road (Vivian Balakrishnan)is bigger than 10 Olympic size swimming pools and about 3 football fields and that 26 Ridout Road (Shanmugam) is more than 19 Olympic size swimming pools and more than 5 and a half football fields in size, I received a query from Desmond Ding Nai Rong. Desmond’s question is this:-
“Maybe it helps commoners to better visualise how many BTO flats can be built on the 2 plots, since commoners are busy making a living and rarely a chance to swim in Olympic size swimming pools nor play football in a standard fields”.

I turned to my good friend Goh Meng Seng, who has vast knowledge of the technical side of HDB, for help to answer Desmond’s question.
Meng Seng supplied me with these information:-
1. The combined land size of 31 and 26 Ridout Road is around 396,100;
2. The size of a 3 room flat is now only 700 sq ft and a 4 room only 850 sq ft;
3. The normal plot ratio used is 2.8 and HDB can build up to 36 stories.

So on the combined plot lived on by Vivian and Shanmugam, you can build an estimated 1386 flats, being a mixture of 3 and 4 room flats.

So by my estimation, around 5,500-6,800 people can live on the huge plots of land that are 26 and 31 Ridout Road!

Hope this helps Desmond!

Below are pictures of a 3 room flat and 4 room flat and of course the opulent Black&White houses with palatial grounds occupied by Vivian and Shanmugam.

He can work harder and harder until he becum a minister loh

Not just rent. Who paid for trees to be cut down, and the place to be refurbished and renovated?

Even if they're paying a meager $20 per month it's still far better than leaving the houses empty.

Ask for independent review for fuck? This is a case that should be investigated by CPIB. 31 Ridout is fucking huge. Big well kept bungalow on a lot of land. I also want to rent it.

SLA claims these bungalows were sitting empty for 4 years. In that case, they are not doing their job. If they hire any decent property manager in Singapore, these bungalows would have been rented in a couple of weeks.

I am not aware of such a review being conducted.

Normally house owner should maintain the premise. Tenant only maintain the house to exact same standards.

The bungalows have been empty for years which shows that rental demand for this sort of property is non existent.

These two ministers rose to the occasion and sacrificed the comfort of their own homes to move into these rental properties in order to generate some revenue for the government.

They should be commended for such selfless acts.

More likely scenario, Rajah Shamu did an arbitrage by renting out his Queen Astrid Park GCB which stands on 20,000 plus sg ft of land.
