The Leader of the Opposition and Secretary General of the Workers' Party, Pritam Singh, will keep his seat in Parliament after his fine, according to Speaker of Parliament Seah Kian Peng on Feb. 18.
The Attorney-General's Chambers had advised that the criteria for disqualifying a Member of Parliament (MP) is a fine of S$10,000 or more for a single offence, not the cumulative sentences of two offences,
The Straits Times reported.
Singh was fined S$7,000 each for two charges relating to what he told the Committee of Privileges (COP), which was set up to look into former WP MP Raeesah Khan and her untruth in parliament.
Seah's statement echoed the
Elections Department (ELD), who also stated that the criterion to be disqualified as an MP is based on a sentence imposed for a single offence.
Seah: WP MP Faisal Manap has acknowledged an advisory on the conduct of MPs
Seah was also quoted as saying that WP MP Faisal Manap had acknowledged an advisory by the public prosecutor to familiarise himself with the expected conduct of MPs under the Parliament (Privileges, Immunities and Powers) Act.
He also reiterated the decision by the public prosecutor not to pursue charges against Faisal for refusing to answer questions from the COP investigating Khan.
Indranee issues note reminding MPs to be truthful in parliamentary proceedings
Leader of the House Indranee Rajah also issued a note reminding MPs to be truthful in parliamentary proceedings,
The Straits Times further reported.
The note said, "It is a grave contempt of Parliament for a Member to deliberately make a false or misleading statement to Parliament or its committees."
This undermines the integrity of parliamentary processes, she added.
She wrote:
"All Members are expected to uphold the highest standards of honesty and integrity and observe the rules of parliamentary conduct so that the public can continue to have full confidence and trust in our Parliament and its representatives."
