With many recruitment agencies in third world countries getting a payment from job seekers to land them a job, I wouldn't put it past them to use fake email addresses to send applications on the applicants' behalf. Heck, I wouldn't even be surprised if they do mass drafting of the resumes for the applicants as well. Be wary, especially if you can only do phone interviews, you might not be getting the same person you thought you are getting.

from NTU with an honour degree, are being employed as an intern with a
salary of $1k!! Probation for 6 months!!

Its not for me to decide who to hire. Most of them do not even qualify for what we want. I'm just astonished by the audacity that some of them even applied without a valid visa. Some, we think wants to just come over and move to another department later. if you ask the right questions, even a mere phone interview can be useful in sieving out the wheat from the chaff.
if you ask the wrong questions, even a face-to-face interview can't save you from hiring the wrong candidate.
if you ask no questions... then you get no answers.

What I mean is that the person you talked to on the phone may not be the person that shows up for work. If you have not met the person, how do you know the person who answers your questions well over the phone is the same one that turns up at your office for the first day of work? Unless you are a sound expert and are able to easily distinguish between any slight difference in voices.
