Unfortunately the opposition is not even commenting much on this. Why keep quiet? This is the PERFECT opportunity to show some leadership and convince the voters that they are a viable alternative!!

Shouldn't the WP present an alternative plan to dealing with this crisis?

The job of the opposition is to put PRESSURE on the government. In the words of Low Thia Khiang, they should SLAP the driver when he is sleeping. So why keep quiet now? Vivian tried to fix the WP previously, so why not fix him back now?

At times I actually feel that the WP's tactful approach is far too weak. They need to step it up a notch. Put pressure on the PAP. Propose alternative approaches. Highlight what they would do if they were in power.

I for one would suggest the following:

1) Propose bringing a case at the ICJ
2) Propose highlighting this issue at the UN
3) Propose a thorough investigation into the affairs of companies like Wilmar and Golden Agri, including suing them in the courts for causing health hazards to 5 million people (this should qualify as a billion dollar compensation case, in the USA, a few hundred million damages have been awarded for much smaller issues)
4) Propose to hand out N95 masks for free to ALL households
5) Propose a blanket ban on ALL outdoor burning activities in Singapore (as Malaysia has done) with 5 years imprisonment for any defaulters. No one can burn anything outdoors including joss sticks and incense. Conduct spot checks to ensure full compliance.
6) Propose to dispatch a task force to Sumatra immediately to provide assistance on the ground including putting out the fires AND arresting anyone who is conducting any illegal burning
7) Propose a cloud seeding program -- even Indonesia appears to be acting on this, Vivian is saying there are no clouds?
8) Demand a thorough explanation as to why we are using 3-hour average PSI readings (and not hourly) as well as why we are not using more updated measuring techniques like AQI or PM2.5 readings (as opposed to the PM10 which we are now using)

That minister by the name of Agung said something about how the issue of extradition has not yet been resolved.

Apparently, alot of former Suharto cronies are wanted by Indonesia but given safe haven in Singapore due to our close ties (thanks to LKY) to the former Suharto regime. They want us to extradite these fuckers back to Indonesia to face trial. The problem is that we do not have an extradition treaty with them. Singapore seems determined to provide a safe haven for these corrupt officials -- allowing them to buy properties here, park their money in our banks etc. Even our banks refuse to disclose exactly how much these people have in their Singapore accounts.

We seem determined to provide these morons with assistance, which pisses the current Indonesian government off.

Why the hell did we do this? If so, don't we have ourselves to blame?

If not for the haze, this issue would not even come to light!!

Then why not conduct an investigation to find out whether the CURRENT Indonesian officials also have their dirty money parked here -- and if so, immediately freeze their accounts? The Indonesians would be forced to take action if this was done.

And even if the Indonesians don't take action -- it means FREE MONEY for the PAP.

At least $200 million could be confiscated from these accounts, which could be used to fund a cloud seeding campaign or to distribute free N95 masks to ALL Singaporeans.

Hit them where it hurts!

If we are so concerned with MONEY, why not confiscate the MONEY of these corrupt Indonesian officials??

Moreover there is NO EXTRADITION TREATY between Singapore and Indonesia

Currently, there are former officials (from the Suharto era) who are WANTED by the Indonesian government to return home and face corruption charges. Singapore has refused to hand over these people, instead allowing them to live here in peace.

Singapore has REFUSED to sign an extradition treaty despite requests from Indonesia to do so.

What the fuck is the meaning of this????

They did a horrible job on SARS, yet Goh Chok Tong wanted to use the SARS thing for political propaganda......

MOH was slow in issuing directives on masks and gloves for doctors and nurses, hence the nurses and doctors were infected.
The virus was passed from one ward to another because of the handling of the medical files which were infected with the virus.

The dramatized hero Dr Alexandre Chao Kwang Howe was infected with SARS but instead, he was diagnosed as dengue. He was supposed to be on medical leave for alleged dengue, but as a doctor, he was irresponsible to break his medical leave and came back to hospital and it was reported very early on he infected the Malay woman patient, who was in the hospital for some respiratory ailment, but died later of SARS. the news was quickly hushed hushed by the media.

Dr Chao was made a hero. The nurses and doctors were made heroes, but the fact is that they're the ones that caused the widest spread of the SARS virus in the hospitals, because never wear masks and gloves when treating patients and handling infected documents.

Unlike in Vietnam, rapid actions taken to quarantine the hospital staff and SARS was not spread.
