The main gripe I have with NS is the entire regime is still designed as if we are waiting for the next major land war consisting of infantry and tanks slugging out with each other in waves. Nobody seems to take into account what practices really work in a high tech high info conflict.......

Just come out alive and with your limbs intact. Beyond the toy generals, costly weaponry and shrill propaganda, the SAF is a farce and a joke that will not survive beyond 48 hours in a real military conflict. my instructor (ocs failure) was punished for waking up trainees in the middle of the morning (after midnight), falling us in, doing pt, and running round the parade ground, just before a 10km run after dawn. during the run, several got heatstroke and majority failed to beat time. the platoon and company commanders were so mad that they complained to S1, and the instructor had to face the music and got demoted to lance corporal. luckily none of us died. we all just decided to run (jog) at a much slower pace.

Your batch really a bunch of pussies. I ever kenna in OCS, in the middle of the night, when the entire cohort of graduating cadets came in and turn us jr cadets out, do leopard crawls, jumping jacks, other stupid PTs, and shout abuse and what not at us. Made so much commotion that our instructors also woke up and see what was happening. This is already after we had a long day, and turn in around midnight, then 2 hrs later got turned out by these fuckers. Our instructors let this go on after a while, and then had to stop these cadets otherwise it would have gone on all night. A few hrs later, 6am, get up and go on 10km run. Then the last km, is fireman lift "wounded cadets". Then after reaching the bunks, minimum 8 chins up. Only after doing all that, then can go for breakfast. U feel like puking, much less want to eat.

I am sure there are still many able and responsible commanders. But insufferable sadistic commanders who are derelict in their duties cannot be tolerated.

In my trainee days, our OC was SOF. Trainning was hard, tough and realistic. But never once did we feel that our commanders didn't care for us. The sergeants and PS were tough on us but they never ever endangered out lives. Heat injuries were dealt with promptly and seriously.

From CO down to OC, that is where the culture is set.

There must be something wrong with the guardsmen commanders these days. They are not commandos and should not be trainned to those standards. Get that chip off your brown berets. Don't act like wanna be red berets.

In your day, there were not that many scholar officers as compared to nowadays. Nowadays, scholar officers are just marking time and getting ready for their GLC, Stat Board and Govt appointments. They are not professional soldiers and hence know nuts about morale and handling of men.

In my ICT, the Armor ABG CO called for artillery when his men were still in the area. Our men were still in action but he just want to make sure that he can win and get Recon 2A. The FSO from artillery was shocked by his decision. In Artillery, the most unforgivable mistake is friendly-fire and yet our formation don't treasure lives.

Do you still believe that there are righteous and good people in army? It's a just selfish environment with cover-ups.
The good ones left, the best Military Police (master sergant), the best air-base officer, the list goes on.

I have seen worse. Ever been in an ATEC with a AI unit that shall not be named. CO was a scholar high flyer marked for greater things in life after the SAF. Failed epically the first ATEC. All the top brass gathered in the tent, and were in a quandary. This high flyer cannot get a failing grade on his ATEC, or it will mark him forever. So, semula. But fail second time. Finally passed ATEC 3rd try. KNN, in real war, enemy got give u 3 chances meh?
