zhihau said:population density and home size plays an important part in our reproduction rate. discuss. :o:o:o
some old post for reference here & here
a short excerpt
biology 101. you want the population to reproduce? keep the standards of living AFFORDABLE and CONDUCIVE. stress will keep the rate of population renewal low. the reasons why Singaporeans ain't producing, simple, HDB flats ain't affordable, costs of living is too high, stress level too high, who in the right frame of mind would dare bring his/her child into such stressful environment?
There are two opposing conditions in this analysis.
It is a proven fact that you need a critical mass for a civilisation to flourish and continue to propagate. Below the critical mass, the civilisation will simply go into extinction. But we are well above this critical mass. So have no fear that there is an anthropological reason why the population cannot multiply.
The other opposing condition is that of saturation. This is best illustrated by the breeding of guppies. Guppies by nature breed profusely. One common Chinese name for guppies is, in fact, 生仔鱼. However if you leave guppies to multiply in a tank with limited dimensions, within a short time, the guppies will stop multiplying due to saturation. And in fact, I have personally experienced seeing such
a guppy population decline and eventually reach total annihilation. I think if we continue to squeeze more and more people into limited space and families into pigeon holes, this will be the eventual result.
Of course, the above analysis looks at only the two extremes. In between, there are a lot of things that can be done but we must bear in mind the undesirable effects as we near either of the extremes.
