David Gledhill hired in 2008 as Head of IT reigns over the worst IT debacle in Singapore's banking history. 7 Hours where the entire Consumer Bank came down.

Even when computers were introduced to local ah pek banks did they experience such an outage across the whole consumer bank.

Fucking disgraceful.

When you sack a group of people, they join your outsource compay & then you rehire them again, especially it is filled with FT's....we better start using another alternative bank.

It is a honest mistake, & they were take off guard with the data overflow & the back up was suppose to work, didn't.

Will the Gupta & Co be sacked , no!...they will get a fat bonuses instead...this is uniquely THEIR sinGAPORE! ( for the FT's)..

They boast they have the best, paid for the best, announce they are the best in Asia, what do the consumer expect; THE BEST!! remember the advertisement OCBC did with the CAKE promise...the consumers demand the best for they say so!

You are comparing with third world standard, ours is Universe Standard, even the established countries looses to us.

7 hours breakdown...not accpetable...late in the evening, some of the POSB ATM's where I live is was still unavailable.....

every1 with posb/dbs account better go update your passbk.

they may just delete or accidentally erase all your savings record:eek:

IBM will have a lots of questions to answer.......

The issue is that they did not have a Business Continuation or a Contingency Plan or maybe they did have one but it did not work. All banks should have backup servers to switch over.

David Gledhill? as head of IT

unless there is another person in the world with the same name, what does David Gledhill knows abt IT? He used to be one of the heads for FI in JPM, if i remember correctly.

ooph! we were caught off guard again!!!
I tried opening my i account that day when it was shut!

It is advisable to update your passbook, change all your passwords, scrutinize all your credit card / bank / statements after yesterday's fiasco.

This advise came from a IT expert as anything could happen in the hours that the fiasco happened.

Guarantees from the SCUMS often are empty confidence building mental masturbation practice.

Better be safe than sorry later. Any rectifications if something goes wrong may take months. Can you survive months without your money?

Just like GIRO, if deducted wrongly, how long before 'THEY' return/refund your money to your account?

Friendly advise from an IT expert....not me.

precisely the reason why I die die refuse to have an account with this shitty bank.

Luckily these fuckers are so egoistic and have their dedicated ATM machines...if not, all ATMs in Singapore will be down.

lesson learnt - don't keep all your money in one bank...have another bank (foreign one) if need be. You don't need to have alot of money to open an account.

And if you look at the shambolic reason given for the lapse...IT breakdown..what type of fuck reason is that?

The issue is that they did not have a Business Continuation or a Contingency Plan or maybe they did have one but it did not work. All banks should have backup servers to switch over.

They do.....but they were taken OFF GUARD!!

There are 2 main issues here;
1) The outage of 7 hours is now the currrent record and
2) The entire consumer banking system from atms, cards ibank and everything else is consumer banking came down.

The second issue is unheard of in Banking in modern times anywhere in the world. MAS made sure that Singapore was one of the first countries to have BCM for Banking IT as it was 4 largest financial centre in the world. Banking modules are built in such a way, that not all system can come down - its called multiple redundancies. When they said thay were honouring cash cheques up till $500, it was a give away - it means they had no sight of the customers balance at all.

DBS outsourced their IT to IBM and the only local bank to do so in 2002, that is why they dragged IBM into it.

This is no ordinary issue and this is also not a 1 in 100 year worse case scenario for risk planning. This is beyond that. I am curious what actually transpired. It is also interesting that they ruled out sabotage very quickly indicating they more or less knew what had happened or isolated the issue. Individual modules such as just ATMs etc is quite commonplace around the world. All the modules is a very first in modern times. Thats like an airbus losing all 3 of their PCs at the same time.
