This project is not economically viable as it will only save a ship abt 5 to 7 days travelling time unlike the suez n Panama canels where the savings is in months.
The military will never support it..
They should welcome it as the canal allows it naval vessels to cross deploy between gulf if thailand and andaman sea without the need to sail through sinkieland. Which general will oppose this idea?
All the talks of creating a physical separation between the restive south is purely baseless. It might be the case during ancient time but in this modern era, canal, rivers etc are no longer a physical barrier.
I agree with you, but the Junta think otherwise though.
It might not be economic viable but it strategically viable for China who is interested to bypass it choking point on Straits of Malacca. To the Thai, it like obtaining a sponsorship to develop their economically backward Southern region.
Win-win for both China and Thai.
The junta won't be in charge for long.
And once the one eyed man is gone....any legitimacy they got left will evaporate
Which one will be faster, dig the kra canal or vote PAP out ?
Nothing at all
If they build the canal, it has to be between dawei( tavoy) in myanmar and exit just south of bangkok. But this route is mountainous and quite long. If they build further south where the isthmus is narrow, its cheaper, no mountains but it location will not be perfect.so the conclusion, no canal will be built.
or it has to be along the thai-malaysian border which is way much longer than the narrowest point on the isthmus.
For goodness sake, this project will never see the light of day. The current regime is going to get kicked out pretty soon and the monarchy's power and influence will be very much diminished in the future.

bro,
Thought the PRCs already started constructing the canal? Work in progress, no?
