BANGKOK - THAIS are donning scarves, farmers are scrambling to save their rice crops and snakes are freezing to death.
That is all because temperatures in this normally balmy country have dipped to their coldest in a decade.
The country has been gripped in a cold spell that blew down from China earlier this month and is likely to last until February, the Thai Meteorological Department said on Saturday.
Mr Chukiat Thaijaratsathian, an official in the department's forecasting office, said temperatures in the country's capital fell to a low of 14.7 degree Celsius on Jan 11 - the coldest in a decade. They have even been colder in the country's mountainous northeast, reaching 4.2 degree Celsius in Nakhon Phanom province.
'We have not had this kind of a cold spell in Thailand for many years,' Mr Chukiat said. 'Seven of our weather stations around the country have recorded the lowest temperature in 10 years.'
At least two people have died from exposure to the cold, according to The Bangkok Post. A 71-year-old monk was found dead on Sunday in Phak Hai district of Ayutthaya, about 50 kilometres north of the capital. An 82-year-old man also was found dead in his apartment in Rayong province, in the east of Thailand. It was unclear when he died.
For most Thais, the cold spell has meant having to don scarves and, in some cases, gloves for the chilly commute to work. Villagers have taken to lighting outdoor fires at night to keep warm - resulting in at least 10 people suffering burns when the fell asleep next to the flames.
The country's agriculture has been hit especially hard by the cold weather.
As much as 59,304 acres has been damaged by the cold, according to The Bangkok Post. 79,000 acres of tobacco plantations also were damaged, the newspaper said.
Snake farmers in parts of the country have complained their slithery reptiles are dying from exposure, the newspaper said, while fish farmers in the country's south said their sea bass were dying off.
Even the wild animals are having a rough time.
The Elephant Hospital in Lampang is watching at least eight ailing pachyderms who have fallen sick because of the freezing conditions. Monkeys in the country's south have abandoned their homes in the Bantad mountain in favor of a local hot spring in a bid to keep warm. -- AP

What happened to all that horse crap about global warming?

Is truth about global warming coming and earth itself will try to heel itself. Global warming is when temperature increase in the atmosphere and when that happen more carbon/other gas is in the atmosphere that will block sunlight to the earth that is when cold climate take over.
Global warming and ice age normally happen at the same time.
Now all around the world breaking record for the highest rain/highest temperature/lowest temperature in this few year alone compare to few century ago.

What is the coldest temperature recorded in Singapore?

The lowest minimum temperature ever recorded in the month of December is 20.6 deg C ( on 2 Dec 1964), while the lowest temperature ever recorded (since record began in 1929) is 19.4 deg C (on 31 Jan 1934).

Cool weather over Singapore are caused by the following conditions :
i ) periods of cloudy to overcast weather accompanied by rain which blocks out the heat from the sun
ii ) season and prevailing wind

Usually the Northeast Monsoon months of December and January are the cooler months of the year with average highest temperature of 29..9 deg C as compared to 31.5 deg C in the months of April and May, and with average minimum temperature of 23.1 deg C in Dec and Jan as compared to 24.3 deg C in the months of April and May. The early part of the Northeast monsoon (months of December and January) is usually characterised by generally cloudy and windy conditions with rain periods lasting for 2 to 3 days at a stretch.

The cool north-east winds which blow over Singapore during this time of the year originate from the cold winter conditions of the interior of the Asian continent. .

I remembered reading something very similar back in the early 80's and it included Hong Kong too. Back here in Singapore, daily mean temperature was in the mid 20's and I was wearing socks to bed!
