Our MRT system is not working well enough for the public , buses are also unable to meet the demand of larger number of commuters . The last train or bus service provided cannot meet commuters' needs compelling them to either take taxis or if they can afford it buy their own cars.
With above in mind , why is there a recommendation to increase taxi charge? The world economy is undergoing severe uncertainties and yet transportation costs is escalating? These are basic needs of the public in general as most of those commuting by MRT or buses are not in the high income group, yet they now have another problem with taxi cost going up. Not that they must take taxi but sometimes when the need arises , they have no choice but to flag down one. Must they be penalised when they need a taxi?
If public transpotation is very efficient , there is no need for taxis for this group of commuters. It is because of the inadequacy of our public transport system that taxis come in handy , otherwise they are mainly for the well off who prefer to ride in comfort instead of driving their own cars.
Since COEs are so high that car prices have escalated horrendously , there must be a better way to keep public transport cost at decent levels. Surely Taxis can be classified as public transport to ease traffic where other means of public transport cannot serve its purpose be exempted from the regular COE bidding so that they are purchased at affordable prices to serve the public. Since the cost of running a taxi is now amplified because of higher COE , exemption should be given so that they can still offer the public competitive rates . Otherwise public transportation cost will continue to spiral upwards adding another component of inflation. Food prices , housing and several other basic amenities are already causing hardship to most families and there must be some ways to stop inflation. If nothing is done to stop inflation , there will be adverse repercussions when people cant make ends meet. This will in turn lead to more crimes , tragedies and instability to our country.
