Re: Taiwanese Hokkien Is Different From Ours

Taiwanese Hokkien (臺灣福建話 or 臺灣閩南語), commonly known as Taiwanese (Tâi-oân-oē 臺灣話 or Tâi-gí 臺語), is the Hokkien dialect of Min Nan as spoken by about 70% of the population of Taiwan.[3] The largest linguistic group in Taiwan, in which Hokkien is considered a native language, is known as Hoklo or Holo (Hō-ló). The correlation between language and ethnicity is generally true, though not absolute, as some Hoklo speak Hokkien poorly while some non-Hoklo speak Hokkien fluently. Pe̍h-ōe-jī (POJ) is a popular orthography for this variant of Hokkien.

Taiwanese Hokkien is generally similar to Amoy. Minor differences only occur in terms of vocabulary. Like Amoy, Taiwanese Hokkien is based on a mixture of Zhangzhou and Quanzhou speech. Due to the mass popularity of Hokkien entertainment media from Taiwan, Taiwanese Hokkien has grown to become the more influential Hokkien dialect of Min Nan, especially since the 1980s. Along with Amoy, the Taiwanese prestige dialect (based on the Tâi-lâm variant) is regarded as ‘standard Hokkien.’

I heard someone said it is a Zhangzhou language. FYI, Amoy is Xiamen. And stop saying "boh lwee", use "boh jhee" instead.

at least they worshipped Ma Zhor and not some ancient middle eastern zombie religions.

Naturally the Taiwanese are not happy with the current influx of mainland tourist. It reminds them about the time when mainlanders first arrived on the island in the late 1940s and for the next 40 years the natives suffered immense discrimination under the harsh rule of the mandarin speaking KMT-led government. The natives are enjoying their new found freedom and taking pride in their culture & heritage and do not want the mandarin speaking PRC tourists to bring back old memories....

I believe it's the chinese taiwanese whoose ancestors came from china that are pissed off at the prcs not the aboriginals. IN any case this type of shit happens here. Take the island of papua in which half of it is under indonesian rule. They are suffering shit from the indonesians but yet nobody says anything cos you know they aren't chinese i guess.

to the taiwanese aboriginals, there are no differences between mainlanders, taiwanese hokkien, hakka people. all of them are bloody Chinese whom stole their lands.

some time ago, the taiwanese news reported a policeman who called the oboriginals "huang na", the aboriginals protested over the insult and demanded an apology. don't know what happened afterwards.

Well that's how the world works. Aboriginals the world over are getting fucked. Like the orang asli from the m&ds for eg but nobody pays attention to that only when chinese do it.

Huang na sounds ok to me. He should see what the whites call their black african slaves niggers.

A Chinese woman who could not speak fluent English was tasered in an Apple Store in the US after she tried to buy more than the allowed quota of iPhone 5 devices.

Xiaojie Li, a 44-year old Chinese woman living in Newton, Massachusetts, bought two of the latest iPhones last Friday at the Apple Store in the Pheasant Lane Mall. She ordered two more online and tried to collect them on Tuesday, but the store refused to sell her them, thanks to a limit of two devices per customer.

The store manager then asked Li to leave, but she claims that her poor English meant she did not understand the command. The manager brought in a police officer, who asked her to leave, but she again refused, resulting in her being held down and tasered, which police say is “standard procedure.”

The woman had a whopping $16,000 in cash on her when she was arrested, though given the price of Apple devices that is not necessarily such a large amount. She claims she was buying the phones for relatives in China, but some suspect she planned to resell them for a profit.

Regardless, the incident appears to be a case of overreaction to someone who clearly presented no threat to the store, staff or other customers. To make matters worse, Li now faces charges of criminal trespassing and resisting arrest, all for wanting to buy more iPhones.

Our hokkien is basically bastardized by Malay, Teochew. Like Taiwanese, most of the sinkie hokkien here are also from Zhangzhou and Quanzhou. Saw a lot of tombstone in LCK were engraved with the word Kinmen and ansi which is part of quanzhuo.
