Olympic Village Sex Fest: Athletes Tell All In ESPN Report

Seventy thousand condoms would be enough for the entire city of Boynton Beach, Fla., but at the Olympic Village, that amount won't suffice.

Why, might you ask? Because the Olympic Village is one big sex fest.

Athletes told ESPN's Sam Alipour all the sexy details about life at the Olympic Village -- a city within the hosting city consisting of houses, cafes, and even clubs -- for the magazine's 2012 "Body Issue."

In the report, the ESPN writer revealed some rather scandalous facts, including that 100,000 condoms are ordered for the games. Apparently officials at the 2000 Sydney Games had to put in an order for 20,000 extra condoms after the initial 70,000 ran out. Since then, an order of 100,000 has become the norm.

Even Hope Solo, a soccer star and Olympic gold-medalist, copped to the raucous nights, when sex comes as either a celebratory act or a "consolation prize."

"I've seen people having sex right out in the open. On the grass, between buildings, people are getting down and dirty," Solo told ESPN The Magazine.

Nevertheless, this is not the first time athletes have openly discussed the "sex fest" that is the Olympics.

In 2008, former Olympian Matthew Syed wrote a piece for the Times of London about how the Olympics and intercourse go hand-in-hand.

"Olympic athletes have to display an unnatural ... level of self-discipline in the build-up to big competitions. How else is this going to manifest itself than with a volcanic release of pent-up hedonism?" Syed wrote, according to the New York Post, which cited the Times of London report.

John Godina, an Olympic shot putter, recently told ABC News that athletes are at the games to work hard, but that they're willing to play a little, too.

"Athletes go there focused and once their job is done, they have fun," Godina told ABC. "They don't necessarily go there looking for it, but things happen ... you learn not to ask a lot of questions."

China Badminton Coach, Li Yongbo, Says 'It's Me To Blame' For Disqualification At London Olympics

-- The coach of the Chinese badminton players who were disqualified for throwing a game says he is to blame.

"As the head coach, I owe the fans and the Chinese an apology," coach Li Yongbo said, according to a report by official Xinhua news agency. "Chinese players failed to demonstrate their fighting spirit of the national team. It's me to blame."

China's Olympic delegation also criticized the two players.

"The behavior by Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli on court violated the Olympics ideal and the spirit of fair play. The Chinese delegation feels distressed over this matter," Chinese Olympic delegation said in a statement released to Xinhua.

South Korean Olympic weightlifter Jaehyouk Sa was forced to abandon the competition today after his elbow snapped back while he was attempting a 162kg lift.
The reigning champion in the men’s 77kg category was taken to hospital after his second attempt at the snatch ended in disaster.
The 27-year-old successfully lifted 158kg (348.33 lbs) but tried to push it up to 162kg (357.15 lbs) the second time round.

But Sa encountered a problem halfway through the lift after he could not get out of the squatting position and his right arm buckled at the elbow.

Officials rushed to his aid as he rolled around in agony and was he escorted from the ExCel venue. He reportedly suffered a dislocated elbow.

Ukrainian feminists stage topless protest near Tower Bridge over Olympic body’s ‘support for bloody Islamist regimes’

Four topless activists from a women's rights group were arrested today after they carried out a protest in central London.
Police were called to City Hall to deal with the protesters, who had accused the Olympics' governing body of having supported 'bloody' Islamist regimes.
Pictures showed officers holding women on the ground and covering their chests

One woman screamed as officers held her.
The demonstration near Tower Bridge, described as an 'Islamic marathon' by the protesters, was organised by the Ukrainian feminist group Femen.
Protesters said the demonstration was against 'bloody' Islamist regimes which they said had been supported by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Some of the women had slogans marked on their bare chests. At least one carried the message: 'No Sharia'.
Femen, a group based in Kiev, was founded in 2008.
The organisation has become internationally known for organizing topless protests against sex tourists, international marriage agencies, sexism and other social, national and international ills.

Farewell my dear badminton.. disgraced Olympian Yang quits sport after scandal

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 08:57 GMT, 2 August 2012 | UPDATED: 10:55 GMT, 2 August 2012

One of the players involved in the badminton match-fixing scandal at London 2012 has reportedly quit the sport.

Yu Yang, who was one of eight players disqualified on Wednesday for deliberately trying to lose matches on Tuesday night, reportedly made her announcement via a verified account on Chinese social media site Weibo.

'This is my last game. Farewell Badminton World Federation. Farewell my dear badminton,' she posted.

Conspirators: Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli have a word and Ha Jungeun and Kim Min-jung get a black card (below)

article-0-1454C7B2000005DC-429_634x415.jpg

Four women's pairs, Yu and Weng Xiaoli from China, South Korean pairs Jung Kyung-eun and Kim Ha-na, and Ha Jung-eun and Kim Min-jung, and Indonesian duo Meiliana Jauhari and Greysia Polii, were disqualified after throwing games in order to manipulate the draw in the round-robin stages.

They were replaced in the quarter-finals by the pairs who finished third and fourth in the two groups affected by the scandal.

The Koreans failed to overturn the decision after lodging an appeal, while the Indonesians withdrew their attempt to contest the charges.

Meanwhile Chinese head coach Li Yongbo has taken responsibility for the farce, telling Chinese news agency Xinhua: 'As head coach, I owe the supporters of Chinese badminton and the Chinese TV audiences an apology.

'Chinese players failed to demonstrate the fine tradition and fighting spirit of the national team. It's me to blame.'

The fiasco had its roots in the unexpected loss of China's second seeds Tian Qing and Zhao Yunlei to Denmark's Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Christinna Pedersen early on Tuesday.

Top seeds Wang and Yu then tried to engineer defeat against Jung and Kim Ha-na to avoid finishing top of Group A and going into the same half of the last-eight draw as their compatriots.

The Koreans rumbled the ruse and vainly tried to copy it in retaliation before the second Korean pair, Ha and Kim Min-jung, went a step further by refusing to play properly against Jauhari and Polii.

The Indonesians did not prove innocent bystanders either as they tried to deny them their objective by attempting the same thing.

Serves were hit straight into the net or out of court and other shots put wide.

The large evening crowd were incensed and booed almost every defective shot.

BWF secretary-general Thomas Lund said: 'The regulations clearly state you have to win every match and you cannot throw some matches to win other matches.

'There's no two ways about that and that is what the disciplinary committee found in the principles of the Olympic spirit.

'The disqualification is from this event and there are no further punishments from now on.'

Chinese player quits badminton after scandal, IOC pressures sport for format change

Were they really trying to lose?

LONDON – Disgraced badminton star Yu Yang quit the sport on Thursday after being kicked out of the Olympic Games, banished from the Athletes' Village and sent home to China.

Chinese newspapers, including the Shanghai Morning Post, reported that Yu had retired from competition in the wake of the scandal that saw her and seven other athletes disqualified for attempting to lose women's doubles group matches.

Yu was claimed to have posted a message on the Tencent microblogging service that indicated she would no longer represent her national team or take part in the international professional tour.

"This is my last game," said the message from a verified account in her name. "Farewell badminton world federation. Farewell my dear badminton."

According to the Associated Press, Yu also appeared on Chinese state television and made an emotional apology for her actions and those of her teammate Wang Xiaoli.

"We did not comply with the Olympic spirit," she said. "And did not deliver a match with our true level to the audience, the fans and friends."

Badminton’s world governing body bowed to pressure from the International Olympic Committee to revamp its controversial format in the wake of the match-fixing scandal that saw the four women’s doubles teams banished from the tournament.

IOC chief Jacques Rogge held talks with badminton world federation secretary general Thomas Lund and made it clear that change in the tournament would be expected ahead of the next Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

"The overall principle is that the Games are about a good sporting performance," said IOC communications director Mark Adams. "When that doesn’t happen we need to take action."

The eight athletes have been sent home from the Olympics in disgrace while the actions of their coaches are now under investigation.

It is unlikely that any announcement regarding the new format will be made before the end of these Games as badminton tries to draw a line under the embarrassing incident. However, Rogge and Lund have a tacit agreement in place that the system will be overhauled in a satisfactory manner in the future.

"They spoke and the outcome was actually very positive," an IOC source told Yahoo! Sports. "But that was primarily because the badminton people were not just open to change, but proactive about it."

Lund is reluctant to abandon the group formula entirely, even though it was responsible for the farcical scenes that saw two South Korean pairs, one Chinese and one Indonesian team deliberately try to lose matches in order to secure a more favorable quarterfinal draw.

"I think that the group system has been a great success but, obviously, given what has happened, it is something that needs to be looked at," Lund said.

The events of this week have made it clear that the present system is unworkable. Two options are being discussed and either of them appear to offer a solution that would eradicate the possibility of match-fixing. One is that group play is retained, but that only the pool winner progresses to the knockout stage instead of the top two finishers.

Another is that a single-elimination tournament is implemented similar to other sports like table tennis, tennis and boxing.

The concept of groups with just one qualifier may win out, as the governing body wants to avoid a situation where weaker players from some less-established badminton nations travel to the Olympics and get to play only one match.

Appeals from the eight players by their federations were summarily rejected and replacement teams that originally lost in the groups were brought in instead.

Badminton has been an Olympic sport since the 1992 Barcelona Games. Despite this week’s controversy, its place in the Games is not considered to be under any threat.

Lithuanian Olympic basketball fan who made Nazi salutes and monkey chants at black players says 'it’s no problem in my country' as he is fined £2,500
Petras Lescinskas, 36, made offensive gestures during London 2012 match between Lithuania and Nigeria
He said such behaviour was acceptable in Lithuania and he'd done it before
'Your behaviour was despicable,' district judge tells him

article-2182537-1449FF96000005DC-383_634x441.jpg

A Lithuanian accountant who made Nazi salutes and aimed monkey chants at black players during an Olympic basketball match has insisted such behaviour is acceptable in his home country.
Petras Lescinskas, 36, has been fined £2,500 after he was seen raising his arm several times while placing his other hand over his top lip to imitate Hitler's moustache.
He was among a group of Lithuanians heard making obscene noises during their country’s match against Nigeria on Tuesday.
His conviction came only three days after a Lithuanian was pictured making similar gestures at black stewards during their team's match against Argentina on Sunday.

Lescinskas admitted racially aggravated behaviour when he appeared at Stratford Magistrates' Court yesterday.
His behaviour was so appalling that it forced some families to move seats inside the basketball arena, the court heard.
But Lescinskas's solicitor told the hearing that his client believed his behaviour was acceptable in Lithuania and he had done it before at previous sports matches.

'As for the gesture, which has been described as a Nazi salute, it is a direct insult to all of those who lost their lives in the Holocaust and the affect on generations since.
'I do not accept that this is acceptable behaviour in your country.
'That behaviour I am sure is unacceptable to your fellow countrymen who no doubt want to distance themselves from your actions.
'The Olympics is a wondrous event not only for Great Britain but for all the nations who are competing, participating or watching on television.
'This type of conduct tarnishes the whole ethos of the Games.'
The court heard that Lescinskas was part of a group of rowdy Lithuanian fans supporting their team against Nigeria in the Olympic Park on July 31.
He admitted having a drink before the basketball match, which his country won 72-53, but insisted he was not drunk when the players stepped on court.
Becky Owen, prosecuting, said other fans were forced to move seats because of his behaviour.
She said: 'The defendant was one of a large number of Lithuanian supporters being generally loud and offensive.
'In particular the group were heard at times to be making monkey-style noises when the Nigeria team had possession of the ball.
'He was arrested because he was seen making a Nazi salute on a number of occasions while placing his finger across the top of his lip.'

Clash: Lescinskas was among a group of Lithuanians heard making obscene noises during their country¿s match against Nigeria
Police officers at the scene could not confirm he directly made monkey noises - but the court heard it was accepted he was part of the group that made them.
Lescinskas, still dressed in his green Lithuanian basketball supporter’s tank top in court, apologised for his behaviour in his native language.
Through an interpreter, he said: 'I regret my actions, I am sorry.'
Ms Gill, defending, said her client believed that his actions were acceptable in his country and he had done it before at previous sports games.
She said: 'He says he has travelled to other countries and supported in this way. He has realised it is not appropriate to behave in this way.
'He regrets his actions and is deeply remorseful.'
Lescinskas, who has a wife and children back in Lithuania, is due to return home when the Olympic Games finish on August 13.

That South Korean Fencer Got Screwed Because… The Timekeeper Was A 15-Year-Old Volunteer?

149543993.jpg

By now, you probably already know how South Korean fencer Shin A-Lam got screwed out of a medal at the 2012 London Olympics. If not, know that it was because of an inexplicable timing error. Well, a timing error that seemed inexplicable until this detail emerged:

The Korean team believes the situation resulted from poor management by the referee and timekeeper. Kim Chang-gon, an FIE referee, said, “I checked after the game that it was a 15-year-old British volunteer girl who was doing the timekeeping.”
So, yeah, “a 15-year-old British volunteer girl” was in charge of a task that determined who got a shot at an Olympic gold medal. Brilliant staffing, here. When I was 15, I didn’t even know how to tell time.

The Chosun Ilbo expanded on the bullshittiness.

In fencing, the timekeeper stops and starts the clock when the referee makes the “allez (go)” and “halt (stop)” sign. When there is a hit, the clock is stopped automatically by an electronic device.

An experienced timekeeper would press the button at the same time as referee’s hand sign, but inexperienced timekeepers sometimes press the button too early or too late.

Austrian referee Barbara Csar turned the clock back to one second when it lapsed to zero after the end of the second out of three plays that took place with one second remaining. It remains unclear why.

Kim said, “It’s possible that the referee did it because she thought the timekeeper had pressed the button before she started the second play.”

The Korean delegation protested, and when that was not accepted, they submitted an official written appeal. But after an hour of deliberation, the FIE gave the same response, saying that there is nothing it could do because the rules dictates that the referee decides the time by looking at the clock on the screen.
So, fencing rules are stupid. But this could have all been prevented if someone experienced was doing an important job at the OLYMPICS. Yes, a novel concept, Mr. Timekeeper Hirer.

Imagine if a 15-year-old was in charge of keeping time at the Super Bowl? He/she’d probably be killed if there was even a whiff of a mistake being made. Fortunately, nobody cares enough about fencing to lash out at this poor girl. Instead, we can properly direct our anger at whomever the idiot was that thought it was a good idea to hire her.

Shin got a “special” consolation medal from the International Fencing Federation (FIE), but c’mon; it’s not the same. They might as well have given her a Burger King birthday crown. I mean, at least people have heard of those. And they’ll respect the shit out of you for wearing that majestic diadem.

LONDON -- South Korea's Ki Bo-bae has won the Olympic gold medal in the women's individual archery after Mexico's Aida Roman failed in a tense shoot-off for the title.

With the scores at 5-5 in sets, Ki had only managed a nine in the shoot-off. With Roman only needing to hit the yellow center ring, she also shot a nine and lost when her arrow was farther away from the target than Ki's.

The gold is South Korea's second in the archery competition at the London Olympics.

Roman's silver was the second medal of the day for Mexico after 18-year-old teammate Marian Avitia beat American veteran Khatuna Lorig 6-2 in the bronze match.

Olympic 'gatecrasher' Madhura Nagendra apologises

A woman who appeared in India's Olympic contingent in the opening ceremony has apologised for an "error of judgement".

Madhura Nagendra told the NDTV news channel she was a cast member at the event, and had not gatecrashed it.

Indian team officials were angered by the woman's presence and had sought an apology.

The head of the London 2012 organising committee, Lord Coe, said she was a cast member who got "slightly over-excited" and joined the ceremony.

Ms Nagendra became known as "the woman in red" because of the colour of the top she was wearing.

She said she had entered the cast after "rounds of audition" and did not walk into the stadium "off the streets".

"[It was an] error of judgement [that] I landed up walking with the athletes. I think I have hurt the sentiments of my people. I apologise," Ms Nagendra said.

"There was chaos. Thousands of people were walking. I was blinded and as a result there was an error of judgement."

Ms Nagendra said she was "hurt" by the criticism of her act on social media outlets.

"I am a proud woman of India with a lot of enthusiasm. I was taken aback by the criticism. I hope this incident will be forgiven and I want to move forward."

India is fielding 81 athletes at the London Games.
