And we have clowns who claim that Orchard Rd floods previously to the same extent and not convinced that its a new phenomenon. We got other clowns that think that the Barrage has no bearing or plays little significance in the recent floods in Orchard Road.

Guess what - what stands between the sea and Stamford canal.

Dr Yaacob Ibrahim also said Orchard Road, which flooded just last Saturday, is a new hotspot.

He said an urgent review of the Stamford Canal is being undertaken.

"We need to review the design of Stamford Canal and its adequacy altogether. I think the last July 17 storm caused us to be very concerned that this a major canal - diverting water all the way to the sea - is flooded. We need to take a serious view of what needs to be done," said Dr Yaacob.

The smartest thing to do is pump out the water of the resevoir in Marina and let the level lie on the previous mark until relief work is done. Its the obvious solution and I am sure the traders in Orchard Road can't afford to lose more millions for the sake of government vanity.

The opposition should raise this as an immediate possibility for the sake of all flood victims. Once we recognise that this should be the immediate short term measure, we can then focus on asking the clowns from PUB to return all the medals given out for the Marina Barrage project.

The PUB chief should be given a paper bag to hide his face for the silly crap about contractor not clearing the canal.

You sure sound dishonest and bitchy for a moderator.

First you think it is Global Warming. Then you think it is not the water level. Further you think the barrage provides flood relief. Now you U-turn and talk cock.

The barrage (including the closed top gates) catches water and very effectively, resulting in high water level. Masturbating and blaming the opened barrage gates not releasing water fast enough is a totally different matter. I am telling you people it was not the problem.

A barrage is both a help and an impediment depending on the circumstance. In a high tide situation, it is a help in keeping out sea water. In a low tide situation, it is more of an impediment because water would drain into the sea even faster without its hindrance. The bottom wall is impervious! Floods were rarer in the past because they required a double coincidence of high tide and heavy rain.

So far, as if by an act of god, the floods happened mostly during low tide. Flood alleviation is bullshit. Flood creation is more likely the case.

Stamford Canals are competing with many others to drain into Marina Reservoir. They become full and slow during heavy rain. Hence water and vegetation from upper stream accumulate where they meet at the culvert. I stopped at the official reason of a stuck canal even though I understood how vegetation and water accumulated because I was hoping the PUB would shed some light. I was less phlegmatic on the TOC website because it did not require a fixed moniker to post comments.

they will exhaust and blame everything including irregular periods of sg women and fickleness of sg men except the barrage. that is sacred and sacrosanct. it can do no wrong.

what do you expect from a keling supremacist/ opportunist? ever since he kena fcuked by jah-rastafar-i in a previous thread, he's been disparately trying to salvage his reputation. he twists and turns as much as the PAP, he spent too much time in the system. he's def an ex/current employee of the civil service.

This shows you are not worth the million dollar salary, any idiot can do that.

My english not powderful. So what is the cause? No need for these oblique remarks. So what is the cause?

1) Drains not wide enough due to too many new projects.
2) Drain blockage or dirty - fire the person in charge of cleaning drain after last flood.
3) Marina Barrage pumps cannot cope with influx of water.
4) Rainfall too heavy. But reports show that this was not the heaviest rains
What is the reason.

You forgot to add:

4. Marina Barrage gates not lowered during heavy rain

Lower for fuck?

Just drill some big holes into the wall at the lowest section and all flooding problems solved!

And to increase Yakult salary so that he can drink more expensive low sugar free yakult!:D

Singapore's population is bursting at the seams ... esp with the latest announcement that the FT policy will again be liberalised to allow in more FT.

What will therefore happen if we pump out the water and then we hit a dry spell? Would you want to go from flooding to water rationing for our ever growing population

The change in the global weather patterns due to global warming have made it extremely difficult to accurately forecast rainy/dry spells. Relying on delicate models to plan such a small city area for water sufficency is sheer foolishness.

BLAH BLAH BLAH ....
WASTING TIME IN PARIAH-MENT...

FLOODS...50 YEARS... CANAL...SUMATRA SQUALL...DRAIN CLOG ! ...BLAH BLAH BLAH...

DON'T THEY UNDERSTAND !!!
IT'S NOT ABOUT FLOODS !!!

SINKILAND IS SINKING !!! SINKING !!!

KNNBCCB !!! :oIo:

Obviously there is mismanagement going on at the highest levels.
Is the root problem the importing of so many foreigners in a short time, without considering the strain on the countries infrastructure

People are blaming Yacoob but I think this fiasco is a group effort. Where was LKY, GCT, LHL when all the decision were made

one one hand, we have buying water from malaysia at any price or flooding, drinking our pee (newater) and lots of reservoirs for us to play in.

what do signapore want?

I am not the moderator.

Despite the precis, you are not convincing. You guys screwed up and need to get your your act your together. It cannot bouncle from a clogged debris at Stamford Canal for the first incidetn to a prolonged silence for the next 2 events. Either you guys are lost, have really no idea what is the causing the incidents or have great difficult accepting that barrage has a part to play in this.

Suggest that you avoid evasive and unrelated comments. Unless there is record high rainfall which is unexcepted etc. do not bring in global warming and other issues which merely deflects the concerns and queries. And you are talking about dishonesty.

Lastly do no worry about my dishonesty or any other attributes. This again avoids addressing the subject at hand and very evasive. You can take it that my character is highly flawed, unreliable and god knows what. Just try to convince other in this forum what you think are the issues causing the Orchard Rd flood.

It was a matter of time that it had to come to Stamford Canal. It will interesting to see how they are going to address it. And Stamford Canal empties into Marina.

Since it was a vision of the old man, it becomes suicidal to admit that the barrage is the cause or partly the cause. Note that all their comments have ruled out the barrage and Amy Khor started the ball rolling by praising the barrage last week, followed by similar comments by Yaacob. It also interesting that media coverage after the 1st event is everywhere else except Orchard Road.

Now Yaacob had brought in everything including Stamford except the Barrage and considering urgent remedial action when only a few days ago our elusive PM suggested that mother nature was the cause.

Looks like a simple comment about your lack of understanding of the word "bourgeoisie" has cut deep. Looks like you are embarrassed and it still hurts.Address the issue, and don't worry about me and my reputation. If I was worried about my reputation, I would cajoling lame brains like yourselves to look good and be popular. If you have no idea about the subject matter and unable to contribute, create a new thread about my flawed character and have a field day.

That is why I've said before, never trust a politician. All politicians are the same. They will say whatever there is for them to remains in power.

Stamford Canal was there and handled the 3 highest recorded rainfalls over the last 50 years and Orchard Road was not worth the mention in the past when it came to floods. The Barrage was a recent addition. It has to be in the mix somehow. The fact that they do not want to put it in the mix is interesting to say the least. If on day 1, they claim that the barrage and other factors including stamford canal are being looked at, we won't be having this discussion.

Interestingly even Yaacob had admitted that Orchard Road is a new hotspot while we have clowns here writing long essays about their theories and of course my reputation which seems more important to them than the issue.
