Statement by PM Lee on By-Election for Hougang Constituency May 26 BE

Re: On lah! election time again!

Next one would probably be some drop dead MP.

On, but to clarify, if he dares not contest, count as I win. That's what we call sidebet bite fishhead. Bets confirmed on Nomination Day and results on Counting Night.

Never heard of this type of bet before. He daren't contest, you win? Bet is off.

PM in FB insults Hougang voters already - says he hope they are wiser this time round

PM Lee wrote in a note on his Facebook page yesterday: "Both the WP and Mr Yaw have let down all those who voted for him."

"I encourage Hougang voters to use this opportunity wisely, to elect the best candidate with commitment and integrity."

Yes indeed, voting for Yaw was a huge mistake. Lets hope they vote the right person this time.

PM has commitment and integrity? Why not stand against the WP candidate who presumably is of lesser commitment and integrity.

How about that PM Lee? Aren't you the BEST candidate?

Voting for Yaw wasn't a mistake; nominating Yaw to stand for GE was a huge mistake.

Since the outcome is rather obvious and the BE result a foregone conclusion, why must the PAP contest and then lose? Why do we want to waste time to move forward to make our country more inclusive? Let's just close ranks and shoo in W on Nomination Day so we dont have to have a BE. The PAP can also spare itself more embarrassing electoral vote results.

First the PM wanted to waste time by stalling HG residents then when challenged in court and about to face an embarrassing court rebuff, now suddenly becomes so nice and says he is doing this for our sake. What kind of PM is this?

Not to win but to halt WP's momentum. Anything significantly lower than 64% will be considered a blow to WP and will likely have an impact in 2016.

How much is the union paying him? $250k a year? Union members should object to the misuse of their money to support the cozy lifestyle of PAP politicians. The unions don't need these PAP politicians in the unions as they are simply deadwood. They are there so their MP pay can be topped up by union salaries. Or for those yet to be elected, the union salaries will keep them interested in the PAP.

Dumb Sinkies kanna cheated again. Why am I not surprised? :D

One Year After GE 2011

3. Foreigners asking Singaporeans to fuck off.
4. COE reaches new height.
5. Minister says $800 can buy HDB flat.
6. Minister says 'expect the train to break down more often"
7. Minister says "HDB flats gets bigger"

SINGAPORE: The Hougang by-election is shaping up to be a straight fight between the People's Action Party and the Workers' Party.

Three opposition parties - the National Solidarity Party, the Singapore Democratic Party and the Singapore People's Party - have said that they will not contest the by-election.

Mr Desmond Choo, who was the PAP candidate for Hougang during the General Election last year, could be contesting this by-election.

Mr Choo currently serves as an adviser to the Hougang grassroots organisations after losing the election last year to Yaw Shin Leong of the Workers' Party.

But a year on, Mr Choo told reporters he felt a change in how residents regard him.

Mr Choo was speaking to reporters on the sideline of a dialogue session with residents of Evergreen Park Condominium in Hougang Avenue 7.

"That's because when I participated in GE11, I only had about three months with them. Now I have an additional year with them, spend a lot more time being close, talking, making sure that we have a lot more interaction time, so definitely we see that residents are a lot warmer, they are more ready to talk to you about issues that matter to them," he said.

Mr Choo said it is up to the Prime Minister to decide who will contest in Hougang, but added that he is ready.

"As far as I'm concerned, we have worked very hard before and after GE 2011. And we are ready to answer any call, so as long as a call comes, we'll be ready for it," he said.

Mr Choo added that the Hougang branch office will be busy making sure the logistics and operations are in place as there is a short amount of time left with Nomination Day falling on May 16. But he added that he is confident they will be ready as they are a seasoned crew.

On Wednesday evening, Chen Show Mao from the Workers' Party was at a Meet-The-People session in Hougang Avenue 5.

Mr Chen, who is an MP for Aljunied GRC, said he was there to facilitate the weekly Meet-The-People session in the single seat ward.

He declined to make any comments about the Hougang by-election, saying that the Meet-The-People session was not the platform to do so.

He said the party leadership will make the relevant statements in due course.

Three other opposition parties said they will not be contesting the coming by-election.

Hazel Poa, Secretary-General of the National Solidarity Party, said after careful deliberation, the party has decided that it will not be fielding a candidate.

The Singapore Democratic Party, in a Facebook posting, also said that it will not be contesting, while the Singapore People's Party's Secretary-General Chiam See Tong told Channel NewsAsia that it is best to avoid a three-cornered fight in Hougang.

In 2008, HDB tore down the Hougang wet market and food center at Hougang Ave 3 to make way for residential and commercial developments. The move greatly upset many Hougang residents. The wet market and food center were a long-time gathering place for the residents. MP Low Thia Khiang even questioned the government on the haste of tearing them down. The issue also became a talking point during the general election last year.

PAP Desmond Choo has now pledged to lobby hard for a new market for the Hougang residents. He said that he has been raising this issue with the Ministry of National Development several times already.

Mr Choo said that building the wet market is part of “a series of initiatives” he has been rolling out. However, he maintained that his plans have nothing to do with the Hougang by-election which PM Lee has just announced that it will be held on 26 May. He said that they are long-term schemes conceived over the past year, that will be carried out “with or without the by-election”.

Mr Choo said, “Nothing is done for the purpose of the election.”

Mr Choo has been rolling out schemes for Hougang residents in recent weeks, such as working with temples to provide free Teochew porridge, opening a job placement centre, and giving free hearing aids to the elderly.

And he has packed his schedule with grassroots events like block and floor parties, and brisk walking with the elderly.

Again, he claimed and insisted that the timing of all these events is “coincidental”. He is also thinking of providing free legal clinics for residents too, like what some of the opposition parties are currently doing.

Even though Mr Choo who represented the PAP in Hougang, lost in the last general election, he felt that residents have since warmed to him. He put this down to his efforts in engaging the Hougang residents. He said he now spends on average 20 minutes with each household during house visits, so he can delve beyond “superficial issues”.

He also changed tactics to walk around Hougang’s coffee shops and shops alone, rather than with the usual entourage of supporters.

After he lost, many Hougang voters told him that they had voted against him even though they believed he could help them, because they wanted to voice their displeasure over national issues. They also feared that Parliament would be left without an opposition voice after Mr Low left Hougang to contest Aljunied GRC.

But now the WP has five elected MPs in the House, Mr Choo said he hopes Hougang residents will give the PAP a chance.

PAP to bank on Yaw factor?
by Tan Weizhen 04:45 AM May 10, 2012SINGAPORE - As news broke yesterday that a Writ of Election has been issued for a by-election in Hougang, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong reminded citizens in a posting on his Facebook page of former Workers' Party (WP) Member of Parliament (MP) Yaw Shin Leong's personal indiscretions, which led to the Hougang seat being vacated , and the WP's handling of the issue.

Mr Lee said: "I hope these events will not distract us from focusing on our national priorities and building an inclusive Singapore."

For those adept at reading tea leaves, Mr Lee's words not only gave a hint of the rationale behind the timing of the by-election but also the People's Action Party's (PAP) strategy in the contest for the WP stronghold.

Singapore Management University (SMU) assistant law professor and Nominated MP Eugene Tan said: "While it remains fresh on the minds of voters, the PAP will try to press home the Yaw Shin Leong issue. But while they will keep Yaw on the agenda, they will not overplay it. It will not be prudent for them to overplay it."

Former NMP Siew Kum Hong believes that the "Yaw factor" will be a major and "obvious strategy" for the PAP, as it calls for a referendum on the WP's performance since the watershed General Election last year - and this includes the Yaw episode.

The WP had booted Mr Yaw out of the party after he persistently failed to answer to the party leadership on rumours of alleged affairs.

Echoing Asst Prof Tan's view, other political analysts felt that the PAP will tread carefully on the Yaw issue during the campaigning.

SMU political scientist Bridget Welsh noted that "personal attacks reflect on the attacker as well", while Institute of Policy Studies senior research fellow Dr Gillian Koh pointed out: "Judging from the explicit responses from residents during the saga, they tended to be more forgiving of Mr Yaw."

Which is why they felt that the PAP could also shine the spotlight on the performance of the WP MPs so far.

While the by-election could be framed as a referendum on the PAP's performance since the GE last year, it could also be seen as a referendum on the WP - with its record number of MPs having been in Parliament for a year.

Said Mr Siew: "(The PAP will) probably bring up the ministerial-pay debates in Parliament, when the WP MPs faltered, and focus on why Mr Low Thia Khiang and Ms Sylvia Lim kept silent."

But Asst Prof Tan noted that such a tactic entails some risk. "The PAP has to be careful to not turn it into a referendum, as that's what the Opposition party will do," he said.

The PAP could also draw attention on what it has done since the GE. On a national level, the PAP could show how it has changed policies and taken citizens' concerns into account on issues such as housing and healthcare, said Dr Koh.

On the municipal level, it could talk about the work done by PAP candidate Desmond Choo, who has been working the ground since early last year, she added.
