State civil servant fined over graft
MALACCA: A state Land and Mines Department assistant officer was fined RM8,000 by the Sessions Court yesterday for accepting a bribe last year.
Judge Ahmad Sazali Omar sentenced Danial Rahmad, 46, from Alor Gajah, after he pleaded guilty to an alternative charge.
Danial, as a Grade 17 assistant officer at the Land Acquisition Unit under the state Land and Mines Department director-general's office, accepted a bribe amounting to RM5,000 from Tee Seng Hoo through Toh Meng Leng for himself and an accomplice in exchange for committing an act in relation to his official duties.
The offence was committed in front of Maybank in Jalan Cheng Baru, near here, about 10.35pm on Aug 8 last year.
He was originally charged with attempting to obtain a bribe from Tee Seng Hoo through Battua Abd Rahman amounting to RM5,000 as an incentive to help prevent a land belonging to Tee from being reclaimed.
Counsel Mohamed Musthafa, who represented Danial, urged the court to be lenient as he could lose his pension and gratuity worth up to RM80,000 should he be jailed.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission deputy public prosecutor Mohd Heikal Ismail asked for an appropriate punishment and withdrew another charge against him.
Ahmad Sazali ordered Danial to be jailed six months if he failed to pay the fine.
