Some common Malay words that are useful to know in JB

Hi, how to pronounce ma'af?
Pronounced as Ma with a short pause and followed with Af. 2 syllables for ma'af.
a is usually pronouced as 'ah' ... it may b pronounced in another way (as 'er') oni wen it occurs @ ze n of a word (eg. in minta) ...

so, ma'af is pronouced as ... mah ahf ... not mah eff ...

minta ma'af is pronounced as ... min ter mah ahf ...

...
Terima kash = thank you
...
shud b ...

terima kasih ...

This is close. Though most people would pronounce 'mak' pause then 'af'

Another common greeting to people you have not met for quite a while is 'apa khabar' literally means what is the news. It used similar to 'how are you?' or 'long time no see'

How come one pronounce as "mah" ahf, one pronounce as "mak" ahf, got different accent?

The rest ok. Except for the two highlighted one.

It should read "Assalaamualikum" - May Peace be with u.

In reply "WaalikumSalam" - Peace be with u too.

What I've read before was "Assalamualaikum" and "Waalaikumsalam".
Why the slight difference with additional alphabet 'a'?

Yes...Muslims are encourage to greet each other such.

Sharp eye there. Yes, I missed out the alpha "a". We try to pronounce the roman text as close to the arabic text. But like they say nothing beats the original...and i prefer to read/pronounce fm the arabic text.

Learn some simple Malay in this Song

Tks for tat video clip. I have relatives who are also teochew. Like their pronounciation i.e. in malay known as "tajuit".

Still remember my kampong days, Chinese, Malay and Indians live happily together. Hey, i love watching the Wang Sa Yeh Fong comical sketch. There was one sketch whereby they spoke broken English, Malay and dialects. But i couldnt find it in YouTube..:o

Wrong if you slur it into 'makaf'.
Don't carry the 'k' into the next syllable.
Its a glottal stop.

You can get by just pronouncing it as ma-af though.
