SINGAPORE: The Ramadan bazaar at Geylang Serai – usually known as the best place to shop during the Muslim holy month – is seeing a smaller crowd this year.

Stallholders said on Saturday that the number of people visiting the bazaar this year has fallen by about 30 per cent. They blamed it on the economic downturn as people are less willing to spend.

The number of stalls participating this year has taken a hit as well. Organisers said the take-up rate is only 80 per cent of last year's figure.

Lowering rental fees from S$5,000 to S$3,500 did not help to attract more vendors.

Everyone else is spending. Malays are heeding PM's call during his NDP rally to "spend within their means", thats all.

It was a great speech as far as they are concern.

Yeah! within their means as in being jobless or employed with low pay because of the influx of low cost Third World Labour.
