WHEN it opened to much fanfare in July last year, the Food Hall at basement 4 of Ion Orchard was packed. Several stalls there had long queues of hungry shoppers and stallholders could barely cope.

Now, six of the 34 stalls have closed, the queues are gone and stall assistants at the remaining businesses stand around looking bored. The shuttered stalls, Arinco King, Hokkaido Express, Tokyo Crepe Girl, Lastchocolate.com, Renaldo's and Freddie's Burger, closed shop about a month ago.

The remaining stallholders say that business is bad because the novelty has worn off and customers have no place to sit after buying food. Mr Clement Tan, 33, outlet manager of Japanese takoyaki chain Tsujiki Gindaco, says: 'When we first opened, the queue stretched to the neighbouring shop. Now, we barely have a queue. People came because we were new. I hope they're not sick of our food.'

For Mr Sam Wong, 27, who runs GoGo Franks, which is well known for its prata sausage roll, sales at his outlet in Ang Mo Kio Hub are 'three times better than at Ion. Even the tenants at Ion don't eat here because the snacks are a bit pricey. If we can't even feed our own, how do we feed everyone else? Those who want to spend more money on a full meal will probably go to the restaurants instead of eating at the snack outlets.'

He cut prices at his Ion Orchard outlet 'by about 10 per cent since last year' to attract more customers since competition among the food outlets is stiff. He also says that rent is high and 'even the more popular shops may earn enough only to pay their rent'. All those interviewed declined to say how much rent they are paying.

Student Lynette Sim, 19, says: 'I'm not surprised that stalls are closing down. I'm sure that the rental in Ion is very high, since it is pitched to a crowd that is more well-off.'

Me too, have been learning how to cook a decent meal and still save a lot of money and can avoid cramming among foreigners who look like hungry vulture in Singapore.

I have to watch what I eat because of health reasons, so for me it's easy not to eat all those unhealthy foods. Those high prices & small portions actually help me to keep to my diet :)

The taste of food in Spore is not as yummy as in the past, so its no big lost.

However when I'm outside Spore, I get tempted. That's when I over eat :D

I have to admit that I'm a lousy cook :D

Spent years living outside Spore & tried cooking for myself without much success :(

Even a student knows that the targeted crowd are those well-off.

Basic target marketing will tell you well-offs do not eat in food court.

Did they put a marketing-idiot in charge ? An FT ?

6 stalls closed oni wat ... never mind 1 ... got 28 stalls still open ... less competition, so much betta ...

We built this city, we built this city.....

Capitaland does it again by raising rents. That's how the CEO LML gets his S$20 bonus!!

Guess who owns Capitaland.

I don't need to go to JB or LOS for a meal.
I would go to a hawker centre or a coffee shop in the heartlands.
An Orchard road shopping mall would be the last place I would go.

Yup. Why go so far? I actually pity the people that live around Orchard because the food there is terribly common and cliched ie would McDonald's and Starbucks taste different from the ones at Hougang, Tampines and Clementi?

They have only some fancy restaurants but most of them can be found elsewhere on the island too. In other malls.

Katong food on the other hand is superior, more dedicated and has no duplication elsewhere.

yeah every mall in sg is so common....one do not need to do his/her shopping or have meals in town as they have them in the suburbs too...i do my shopping online and overseas and for food anywhere cheap and convenient will do as they have branches everywhere and they all the same

I do eat in the heartlands on a regularly basis, but have seen the portions shrinking. Some of thesee heartland places have even closed.

I don't just travel to eat but whenever I travel I do take advantage of the cheaper prices: haircut, massage,... ,& food. When you travel you really get to see just how expensive Spore is

At the way they price the food at ION, it's matter of time all of them will closed shop!
The ION landlord are over charging the Food court rental, they passed the bugs to consumers, so they think consumers are all stupid? is it?

By year end more than half will closed!! good luck!! Ah Yong!! I mean ION!

If I am foodcourt operator I will just keep charging sky high rentals. There will always be idiots willing to rent.

There's a captive market, those who work around there.
These people don't have much choice

Aren't there cheaper places to eat at, like Lucky Plaza, Far East Plaza, or the hawker centre near Somerset Youth Park?
